Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Almsgiving as a rhetorical device in 4QTobit?

open access: yesHTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies, 2018
This article is a sequel to an earlier exploration of the possibility of a shift in the Book of Tobit from the Deuteronomistic theological perspective in the beginning to a more nuanced concept of theodicy in the end.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Subsemigroups of virtually free groups : finite Malcev presentations and testing for freeness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This paper shows that, given a finite subset X of a finitely generated virtually free group F, the freeness of the subsemigroup of F generated by X can be tested algorithmically. (A group is virtually free if it contains a free subgroup of finite index.)

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Soil management in vegetable gardens in the Eastern Free State and its impact on sustainable production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
ThesisThe Free State Province has a population of about 2.9 million people (7% of the national population), growing at 1.5% per annum, with a density of 22 persons per km2. Before 1994, agricultural research and development efforts in South Africa were

In vitro anthelmintic activity of Heliotropium indicum, Senna fistula and Spigelia anthelmia used as worm expeller in South West Nigeria

open access: yesBangladesh Journal of Pharmacology, 2015
The anthelmintic potential of Heliotropium indicum, Senna fistula and Spigelia anthelmia were investigated using nematodes larvae from sheep and adult earthworms in order to justify the folkloric claim of the plants as worm expeller in south west of ...

MULTIPLICATIVE MEASURES ON FREE GROUPS [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Algebra and Computation, 2003
We introduce a family of multiplicative distributions {μs|s∈(0,1)} on a free group F and study it as a whole. In this approach, the measure of a given set R⊆F is a function μ(R) : s → μs(R), rather then just a number. This allows one to evaluate sizes of sets using analytical properties of their measure functions μ(R).

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Why is OBE failing in the township schools of the Free State Goldfields? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Published AticleThe learners going through outcomes-based education (OBE) were expected to acquire skills which would help them to become critical thinkers, good workers and good citizens.
