The enumeration of finite rings

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 106, Issue 4, Page 3240-3262, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Let p$p$ be a fixed prime. We show that the number of isomorphism classes of finite rings of order pn$p^n$ is pα$p^\alpha$, where α=427n3+O(n5/2)$\alpha =\frac{4}{27}n^3+\mathnormal {O}(n^{5/2})$. This result was stated (with a weaker error term) by Kruse and Price in 1969; a problem with their proof was pointed out by Knopfmacher in 1973.

Weakly binary expansions of dense meet‐trees

open access: yesMathematical Logic Quarterly, Volume 68, Issue 1, Page 32-47, February 2022., 2022
Abstract We compute the domination monoid in the theory DMT$\mathsf {DMT}$ of dense meet‐trees. In order to show that this monoid is well‐defined, we prove weak binarity of DMT$\mathsf {DMT}$ and, more generally, of certain expansions of it by binary relations on sets of open cones, a special case being the theory DTR$\mathsf {DTR}$ from [7].

On the extreme non‐Arens regularity of Banach algebras

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 104, Issue 4, Page 1840-1860, November 2021., 2021
Abstract As is well‐known, on an Arens regular Banach algebra all continuous functionals are weakly almost periodic. In this paper, we show that ℓ1‐bases which approximate upper and lower triangles of products of elements in the algebra produce large sets of functionals that are not weakly almost periodic.

Free idempotent generated semigroups: The word problem and structure via gain graphs [PDF]

open access: yesIsrael Journal of Mathematics, 2021
Building on the previous extensive study of Yang, Gould and the present author, we provide a more precise insight into the group-theoretical ramifications of the word problem for free idempotent generated semigroups over finite biordered sets. We prove that such word problems are in fact equivalent to the problem of computing intersections of cosets of

Free idempotent generated semigroups over bands and biordered sets with trivial products [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Algebra and Computation, 2016
For any biordered set of idempotents [Formula: see text] there is an initial object [Formula: see text], the free idempotent generated semigroup over[Formula: see text], in the category of semigroups generated by a set of idempotents biorder-isomorphic to [Formula: see text].

Abundant semigroups and constructions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
This thesis studies two classes of semigroups, given by presentations, with regard to weak regularity properties. Since its introduction by Fountain in the late 1970s, the study of abundant and related semigroups has given upward thrust to this ...

Free idempotent generated semigroups over bands

open access: yes, 2015
Free idempotent generated semigroups IG$(E)$, where $E$ is a biordered set, have provided a focus of recent research, the majority of the efforts concentrating on the behaviour of the maximal subgroups. Inspired by an example of Brittenham, Margolis and Meakin, several proofs have been offered that any group occurs as a maximal subgroup of some IG$(E)$,

Nonstandard characterisations of tensor products and monads in the theory of ultrafilters

open access: yesMathematical Logic Quarterly, Volume 65, Issue 3, Page 347-369, October 2019., 2019
Abstract We use nonstandard methods, based on iterated hyperextensions, to develop applications to Ramsey theory of the theory of monads of ultrafilters. This is performed by studying in detail arbitrary tensor products of ultrafilters, as well as by characterising their combinatorial properties by means of their monads.

Jordan homomorphisms and T‐ideals

open access: yesJournal of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 113, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Let A$A$ and B$B$ be associative algebras over a field F$F$ with char(F)≠2${\rm char}(F)\ne 2$. Our first main result states that if A$A$ is unital and equal to its commutator ideal, then every Jordan epimorphism φ:A→B$\varphi:A\rightarrow B$ is the sum of a homomorphism and an antihomomorphism. Our second main result concerns (not necessarily
