Numerical simulation of rectangular dropshafts using a volume-of-fluid (VoF) technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper focuses on the implementation, validation and exploitation of a vertical dropshaft flow operation using the commercial VOF-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, FLOW-3D®.

Velocity and pressure measurements on a broad-crested weir: Physical measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Basic experiments were conducted on a large-size broad crested weir with an upstream rounded corner. Detailed velocity and pressure measurements were performed for a range of flow conditions.

Gold Creek Dam and its Unusual Waste Waterway (1890-1997): Design, Operation, Maintenance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Completed in 1885, the Gold Creek dam is an earthen dam located on the outskirts of Brisbane, Australia. The spillway system was refurbished three times, each time to increase the maximum overflow capacity.

Free Overfall in Inverted Semicircular Channels

open access: yesJournal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2003
This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on free overfall in a smooth inverted semicircular channel. Applying the momentum equation based on the Boussinesq approximation, the flow upstream of a free overfall is theoretically analyzed to calculate the end-depth-ratio (EDR).

An adaptive fixed-mesh ALE method for free surface flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this work we present a Fixed-Mesh ALE method for the numerical simulation of free surface flows capable of using an adaptive finite element mesh covering a background domain.

Measurements of Air Concentration and Velocities in a Free Falling Water Jet [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The prediction of air entrainment in a free falling water jet (two-phase flow) is affected by large uncertainties. A current research project at the Vienna University of Technology is dealing with this phenomenon by means of experimental tests and CFD ...

An Experimental Study of Roman Dropshaft Hydraulics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In Roman aqueducts, series of vertical dropshafts were used to dissipate the kinetic energy of the flow: i.e., the dropshaft cascades. A re-analysis of Roman dropshaft hydraulics is conducted with physical model tests.
