Study on Piston Motion Control Strategy of Single Piston Hydraulic Free-piston Engine

2012 Second International Conference on Intelligent System Design and Engineering Application, 2012
This paper investigates the piston motion control strategies of a single piston hydraulic free-piston diesel engine, which is intended to be a power supply for hydraulic propulsion systems. The Cycle fuel mass is determined by engine displacement and load.

Modelling of a free piston problem

2006
We give a qualitative analysis of the free boundary value problem which models the motion of a piston. A basic role is played by a third-order operator, whose properties are used for solving preliminary problems. The differential equations are transformed into a nonlinear Volterra system, which is dealt with by the fixed point theorem.

Friction characteristics of piston rings in a free-piston engine generator

International Journal of Engine Research, 2016
Free-piston engine generator is a new alternative to traditional reciprocating engine, which moves without mechanical restriction of crankshaft system. This article investigated numerically the friction characteristics of piston rings in a free-piston diesel engine generator by adopting coupled models of dynamic and friction.

The Free-Piston Shock Tube

Aeronautical Quarterly, 1966
SummaryA study of shock tube operation with free-piston compression of the driver gas is presented. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that shock Mach numbers exceeding 30 in air may be obtained with an apparatus of moderate size. The operating limitations imposed by the maximum pressures allowed in the apparatus, by the ratio of the volume ...

Dynamic Analysis of the Single Piston Hydraulic Free Piston Engine

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011
The connection of the engine body and the base was simplified as a spring and a damper to analyze the body vibration of the single piston hydraulic free piston engine. It was demonstrated that the increasing of the connection spring rate can reduce the amplitude of the body vibration.

SUPERCHARGING in the FREE-PISTON CYCLE

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1959
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">THE RESULTS of analytical studies backed by actual tests concerning the use of supercharging in the free-piston cycle are reviewed. They indicate that, under conditions of increased cycle pressure ratio and of adequate cooling of the air, supercharging has power possibilities far

Simulation of an Opposed-Piston Four-Stroke Free-Piston Generator

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
In order to achieve efficient conversion of the chemical energy of fuel into the electrical energy, a novel opposed-piston four-stroke free-piston generator is developed in this paper by equipping one free-piston engine with two linear generators. Mathematical models of the opposed-piston four-stroke free-piston generator are created based on the ...

Hydraulic free piston engine — Challenge for control

1999 European Control Conference (ECC), 1999
A hydraulic free piston engine, HFPE, combines a diesel engine and a hydraulic pump into one compact component. In practical view there is only one linearly moving part in the HFPE, the piston assembly, which contains combustion and hydraulic pistons and piston rod.

Stability, Control, and Constraint Enforcement of Piston Motion in a Hydraulic Free-Piston Engine

IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2017
A free-piston engine (FPE) requires stabilizing feedback control to manage piston motion and ensure safe operation. A high-fidelity model, which simulates the FPE behavior by combining dynamic, thermodynamic, and hydraulic submodels, is exploited as an engine surrogate for control development.

Motion control of a hydraulic free-piston engine

2012 American Control Conference (ACC), 2012
Free-piston engine (FPE), as an alternative of the conventional internal combustion engine, has a high potential in terms of energy saving given its wide range of potential applications and high efficiency. One of the technical barriers that prevents the wide spread of this technology is the lack of precise piston motion control.
