Calibration and comparison of the NASA Lewis free-piston Stirling engine model predictions with RE-1000 test data [PDF]

open access: yes
A free-piston Stirling engine performance code is being upgraded and validated at the NASA Lewis Research Center under an interagency agreement between the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA Lewis.

Internal position and limit sensor for free piston machines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A sensor for sensing the position of a reciprocating free piston in a free piston Stirling machine. The sensor has a disk mounted to an end face of the power piston coaxially with its cylinder and reciprocating with the piston The disk includes a rim ...

A BioLiving Periosteum Evokes Centripetal Regeneration in Challenging Bone Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Large bone defects often suffer from insufficient central healing. This study engineers a BioLiving periosteum that mimics the native structure. It sequentially delivers remote chemical cues and contact physical cues in a signaling‐relay manner, effectively recruiting and guiding endogenous cells toward the defect center.

Linear Generator for a Free Piston Stirling Engine [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2014
In this paper we present some aspects about the design of a Stirling engine driven linear generator. There are summarised the main steps of the magnetic and electric calculations with application to a particular case of a cogeneration plant bassed on ...

Overview of the 1985 NASA Lewis Research Center SP-100 free-piston Stirling engine activities [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
This effort is keyed on the design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of a 25 kWe Stirling space-power technology-feasibility demonstrator engine. Another facet of the SP-100 project covers the status of a 9000-hr endurance test conducted on a 2 kWe ...

Free piston linear generator in comparison to other range-extender technologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The free piston linear generator is a new range-extender technology. It converts chemical energy into electrical energy by means of a combustion process and linear generator.

An Implanted Tooth That Can Feel

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To endow the implanted tooth with masticatory perception, herein we demonstrate that a 3D‐printed piezoelectric‐core/robust‐sheath implanted tooth can rebuild the sensing feedback, serving as “mechanoreceptors” in converting the mechanical chewing force to electrical signals, and up to brain through surrounding alveolar nerve system.

Numerical Analysis of the Piston Motion in a Free Piston Driver

open access: yesJOURNAL OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY FOR AERONAUTICAL AND SPACE SCIENCES, 2007
A numerical analysis of a piston motion in a free piston driver has been conducted including a diaphragm rupture. Quasi-one-dimensional flow is assumed in the driver. Various losses, which are generated in a compression process, are simplified. A process of the diaphragm rupture is assumed by Outa’s model. Experiments are also conducted by using a free
