Improving Free-Piston Stirling Engine Power Density

open access: yes, 2016
Analyses and experiments demonstrate the potential benefits of optimizing piston and displacer motion in a free piston Stirling Engine. Isothermal analysis shows the theoretical limits of power density improvement due to ideal motion in ideal Stirling ...

Convergence of Organ‐on‐a‐Chip and Freeform Printing of Sacrificial Poly(2‐cyclopropyl‐2‐oxazoline) Enables the Generation of Perfusable Endothelialized Channels in Hydrogels

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
We employ freeform printing of thermo‐responsive poly(2‐oxazoline) to directly fabricate suspended sacrificial vascular templates within Organ‐on‐a‐chip devices. This enables circular, perfusable channels down to 200 µm without post‐processing.

Hierarchically Porous Coatings for Cellulose Fibers by Core–Shell Particle Templating

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Hybrid and functional core–shell particles comprising a silica core and a polymer shell were synthesized and used to develop a coating and etching process applied to a cellulose substrate. This resulted in highly porous, functional coatings on a cellulose membrane for further application in cellulose‐based adsorbers and advanced membrane technology ...

Finite‐Time Disturbance Observer‐Based Nonlinear Robust Adaptive Control of Hydraulic Manipulator With Parameter Identification

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical System Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hydraulic manipulators exhibit strong coupling, pronounced nonlinearities, and significant modeling uncertainties, which hinder high‐precision motion control. This paper proposes a finite‐time disturbance observer–based nonlinear robust adaptive control (RAC‐FTDO) framework enhanced by a physically consistent dynamic parameter identification ...

Dynamics and Control of a Free-Piston Diesel Engine

open access: yes, 2007
Free-piston diesel engines are characterized by freely moving pistons without any crankshaft or camshaft connected to the pistons. This allows a compact and efficient engine design, but requires automatic control of the piston motion.

Characteristics, properties and limitations of per‐ or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and fluoropolymers

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
An overview and categorization of man‐made per‐ or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) including low‐molar‐mass and high‐molar‐mass fluorochemicals, and their international regulations is presented. Though certain PFASs are toxic, bioaccumulative and cross the human cellular membranes, others, such as fluoropolymers, are safe, reliable and involved in ...
