Dynamic Behaviour Prediction Of Free-piston Stirling Engines
Proceedings of the 25th Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference, 2005The paper presents an integrated methodology for both the design optimization and the performance evaluation of free-piston Stirling engines (FPSE) suitable for space applications. In particular, the prediction of the dynamic behaviour is the problem here considered in more detail.

Dynamic Stability of Free Piston Stirling Engines
14th Biennial Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise: Nonlinear Vibrations, 1993Abstract A Stirling engine develops work output from a thermal input. It is a quiet pollution free engine, which can use any heat source, including solar power. The piston-displacer mechanism is essentially a vibrating spring mass system and can be dynamically modelled, leading to a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential ...

Stability analysis of free piston Stirling engines
The European Physical Journal Applied Physics, 2013This paper presents a stability analysis of a free piston Stirling engine. The model and the detailed calculation of pressures losses are exposed. Stability of the machine is studied by the observation of the eigenvalues of the model matrix. Model validation based on the comparison with NASA experimental results is described.

Linear Dynamics of Free-Piston Stirling Engines
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Power and Process Engineering, 1985The free-piston Stirling engine (FPSE) is a heat driven mechanical oscillator from which power can be extracted. Linear dynamics is applied here in order to obtain: a stability criterion, a means for determining the oscillation frequency, relative amplitudes of the dynamic components, effects of friction on starting and the locus of the roots of the ...

Hopf Instabilities in Free Piston Stirling Engines
Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, 2013Free piston Stirling engines (FPSEs) are examples of closed cycle regenerative engines, which can be used to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy. These engines are multidegree-of-freedom dynamical systems, which are designed to operate in a periodic manner. Traditionally, for design purposes, linear models are used and the associated periodic

Reflections on Free-Piston Stirling Engines, Part 2: Stable Operation
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1998Abstract: In this paper a new linearization technique of the dynamic balance equations of a free-piston Stirling machine is developed. It takes into account the non-linear thermo-fluid-dynamic terms inherent in the machine, while keeping the linearity of the differential dynamic equations.

Large Free-Piston Stirling Engines
1985The word ‘large’ applied to Stirling engines means different things to different people. An engine having a 3 kW output would be large to those working on artificial hearts or cryocoolers for electronic applications. It would be small, negligibly so, to those interested in locomotive propulsion.

Axially Opposed Magnetization for Free Piston Stirling Engines
International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, 2013A renewed focus on Free Piston Stirling Engines (FPSE) for Green Solar based power generation provides a vehicle to explore linear alternator technologies for improved performance and efficiency. This paper evaluates Axially Opposed Magnetization (AOM) linear alternators and the potential advantages this technology provides mechanically and ...
