Independence and Product Systems

open access: yes, 2003
Starting from elementary considerations about independence and Markov processes in classical probability we arrive at the new concept of conditional monotone independence (or operator-valued monotone independence).

Medical Knowledge Integration Into Reinforcement Learning Algorithms for Dynamic Treatment Regimes

open access: yesInternational Statistical Review, EarlyView.
Summary The goal of precision medicine is to provide individualised treatment at each stage of chronic diseases, a concept formalised by dynamic treatment regimes (DTR). These regimes adapt treatment strategies based on decision rules learned from clinical data to enhance therapeutic effectiveness.

Best Before? Expiring Central Bank Digital Currency and Loss Recovery

open access: yesJournal of Money, Credit and Banking, EarlyView.
Abstract Physical cash enables payments in the absence of electricity or network coverage. Such offline payment functionality promotes the operational resilience and, particularly in developing countries, the accessibility of payments. Central banks are exploring issuing digital cash substitutes with similar offline payment functionality.

Subtle Discrimination

open access: yesThe Journal of Finance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We introduce the concept of subtle discrimination—biased acts that cannot be objectively ascertained as discriminatory. When candidates compete for promotions by investing in skills, firms' subtle biases induce discriminated candidates to overinvest when promotions are low‐stakes (to distinguish themselves from favored candidates) but ...

Tensor Changepoint Detection and Eigenbootstrap

open access: yesJournal of Time Series Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Tensor data consisting of multivariate outcomes over the items and across the subjects with longitudinal and cross‐sectional dependence are considered. A completely distribution‐free and tweaking‐parameter‐free detection procedure for changepoints at different locations is designed, which does not require training data.

A Note on Local Polynomial Regression for Time Series in Banach Spaces

open access: yesJournal of Time Series Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This work extends local polynomial regression to Banach space‐valued time series for estimating smoothly varying means and their derivatives in non‐stationary data. The asymptotic properties of both the standard and bias‐reduced Jackknife estimators are analyzed under mild moment conditions, establishing their convergence rates.

Effective When Distinctive: The Role of Phonetic Similarity in Nested Dependency Learning Across Preschool Years

open access: yesLanguage Learning, EarlyView.
Abstract Parallel tracking of distant relations between speech elements, so‐called nonadjacent dependencies (NADs), is crucial in language development but computationally demanding and acquired only in late preschool years. As processing of single NADs is facilitated when dependent elements are perceptually similar, we investigated how phonetic ...

Measure‐valued processes for energy markets

open access: yesMathematical Finance, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 520-566, April 2025.
Abstract We introduce a framework that allows to employ (non‐negative) measure‐valued processes for energy market modeling, in particular for electricity and gas futures. Interpreting the process' spatial structure as time to maturity, we show how the Heath–Jarrow–Morton approach can be translated to this framework, thus guaranteeing arbitrage free ...

The fundamental theorem of asset pricing with and without transaction costs

open access: yesMathematical Finance, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 567-609, April 2025.
Abstract We prove a version of the fundamental theorem of asset pricing (FTAP) in continuous time that is based on the strict no‐arbitrage condition and that is applicable to both frictionless markets and markets with proportional transaction costs. We consider a market with a single risky asset whose ask price process is higher than or equal to its ...

Order Routing and Market Quality: Who Benefits From Internalization?

open access: yesMathematical Finance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Does retail order internalization benefit (via price improvement) or harm (via reduced liquidity) retail traders? To answer this question, we compare two market designs that differ in their mode of liquidity provision: In the setting capturing retail order internalization, liquidity is provided by market makers (wholesalers) competing for the ...
