Using stimulus material drawn from a single category, it is shown that formal recognition tests yield superior performance to recall when the category cannot be completely enumerated by the subjects, but not otherwise. Furthermore, within these categories recognition is superior only if unfamiliar items are selected as stimuli.

Modelling recall order in free recall experiments

This model is an extension to Cowan's (1966) original model. Pseudo-Primacy Effects in Free Recall
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1973Shiffrin (1970) has suggested that the primacy effect in the serial position curve is the result of the temporal distinctiveness of the initial items in the list. Given this assumption a pseudo-primacy effect should be observed in other parts of the list if distinctive cues are provided. The present experiments tested this prediction.

Using three different procedures, it was found that the imageability of stimulus material affected the secondary memory component of free recall, but not the primary memory component. In a final recall test, a negative recency effect was found in the case of material of high imageability, but not in the case of material of low imageability.
