The renaissance of serious interest26–28 in the transfer of power by radio waves is doubtless the result of technological gains in microwave radar and communication systems over the past 25 years, and also the more recent demonstration that microwave energy should be generated at power levels appropriate to some applications of wireless power transfer.

Chapter 8 showed how both free-space- and waveguide-based optical combiners can implement specific eyebox expansion schemes, in either VR or AR mode. This chapter reviews the various AR free-space combiners, and the next chapter addresses the waveguide combiner architectures used in industry today.

Optical fibers and planar integrated waveguides are now both used for communications when extremely large bandwidths of up to 100 GHz are required. In monomode operation, these structures confine the optical waves in cross sections lying between 1 and 10 p.m. Geometrically, these guided interconnections are analogous to electrical ones.

This presentation shares the inception of a new student-driven architecture publication, a poster-zine called SPACE FOR FREE. The zine is an outgrowth of a fourth year option studio course, which asks students to use walking and close observation as a main method in order to learn from existing spaces in our city – in this case, Toronto, Canada.

Electromagnetic waves differ in energy according to their wavelength. Their ability to propagate is also different in different propagation environments. In free space (vacuum) they are characterized by their ability to propagate without obstruction and without atmospheric effects. The path loss under these conditions is said to be free space path loss.
