Free-space optical interconnection scheme
Applied Optics, 1989One of the limiting factors in the design of large scale digital systems is communication [1]. The use of conventional wiring for high speed communication entails high energy dissipation, crosstalk, ground loops and low interconnect density due to physical size constraints.

Feedforward-based free-space optical communication
Applied Optics, 2021We propose to use 1-bit feedforward information at the free-space optical (FSO) receiver to improve its error performance. We concentrate upon M -ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signaling and design an error-optimal PAM constellation for providing efficient 1-bit feedforward information to the receiver.

Free-space optical components and systems can be fabricated using planar techniques such as pattern generation using an electron-beam writer, photolithography, reactive ion etching and thin film deposition. This allows to integrate several optical components such as lenses and beamsplitters on one side of a single substrate [1]; see Fig. 1.

Free space optical wireless network
2011 13th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2011This talk explore an over the air optical wireless network and to create a network architecture for reliable high data rate free space optical networks that can interoperate with traditional wired and fiber networks. These networks will have significant impact for applications between ships, airborne vehicles, satellites and land-based cloud computing ...

Free-space digital optics is a topic based on many disciplines: nonlinear optics, computer and switching network architectural design, semiconductor physics, mechanical design, and, of course, optical system design. Initial work in this area concentrated on the discovery and development of nonlinear optical effects with which to form optical switching ...

Free-space wavelength-multiplexed optical scanner
Applied Optics, 2001A wavelength-multiplexed optical scanning scheme is proposed for deflecting a free-space optical beam by selection of the wavelength of the light incident on a wavelength-dispersive optical element. With fast tunable lasers or optical filters, this scanner features microsecond domain scan setting speeds and large- diameter apertures of several ...

Optical interconnect using free space optics
Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1989Integrated free space optical interconnect has the potential to provide a large number of high speed connections between electronic integrated circuits. The overall optical arrangement is briefly described. We intend to use a single laser or a pair of lasers to power an interchip connection with several hundred communications channels.

Simulating free-space optical computing architectures
Applied Optics, 1998Major issues in optoelectronic system design include timing, synchronization, and control. Designing free-space optical computing architectures is difficult because of the high degree of system complexity, parallelism, and concurrency in conjunction with the high cost and lack of availability of devices. Current simulation tools lack the expressiveness

Free-Space Optical Communications
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2006With recent successes of laboratory, inatmosphere, and space demonstrations of free-space optical communications, there is no doubt that the technology is ready for operational deployment. While these successes have shown that there are no laws of physics against such systems, their estimated system costs are still much too high for serious ...

Optical circuitry for free-space interconnections
Applied Optics, 1990A means for losslessly implementing arbitrarily space-variant optical interconnections in free space without sacrificing optical space-bandwidth product or power is described. The technique uses space-variant mirrors and polarization beam splitters to separate and combine sets of device output spots, where a different interconnection operation is ...
