Successful Free Tissue Transfer in the Profoundly Hypercoagulable Glioblastoma Multiforme Patient: Surgical Experience and Anticoagulation Protocol

open access: yesJournal of Reconstructive Microsurgery Open, 2020
Background Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) produces a hypercoagulable environment and is associated the highest rates of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary emboli (PE) of any malignancy.

Viability and tissue quality of cartilage flaps from patients with femoroacetabular hip impingement: A matched-control comparison [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Chondrolabral damage is commonly observed in patients with cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Chondral flap reattachment has recently been proposed as a possible preservation technique.

Fascial Free Flap for Reconstruction of the Dorsolateral Hand and Digits: The Advantage of a Thin Contour

open access: yesArchives of Plastic Surgery, 2016
Background Fascial free flaps have been widely used for reconstruction of the hand because they are thin. However, studies reporting objective data regarding the advantages of this approach are lacking. Thus, we report our experience with such flaps.

3D Bioprinting of Thick Adipose Tissues with Integrated Vascular Hierarchies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
An advanced 3D bioprinting technique is used here to create thick adipose tissues with a central, vessel and extensive branching. The construct is made using alginate, gelatin and collagen‐based bioinks. Flow through the complex vessel network is demonstrated as well as its successful integration with a femoral artery following implantation in a rat ...

Noncontact Diffuse Optical Assessment of Blood Flow Changes in Head and Neck Free Tissue Transfer Flaps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Knowledge of tissue blood flow (BF) changes after free tissue transfer may enable surgeons to predict the failure of flap thrombosis at an early stage. This study used our recently developed noncontact diffuse correlation spectroscopy to monitor dynamic ...

The submental flap: Be wary

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2022
The submental island flap (SIF) is as an alternative to free flaps in head and neck reconstruction. 10 patients underwent submental flaps. All ten patients suffered failure of SIF as the definitive reconstructive procedure. Despite comparing favorably to

Functional Hydrogel for Modulating Lipid Droplets and Neuroinflammation in Head Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
After TBI, elevated cholesterol levels in activated microglia lead to the accumulation of cholesterol esters in lipid droplets, exacerbating neuroinflammation. A β‐cyclodextrin‐conjugated GelMA (βCD‐GelMA) hydrogel is developed to promotes cholesterol efflux and reduces LDL influx, thereby alleviating intracellular cholesterol and lipid droplet buildup.

Gingival hyperplasia around dental implants in jaws reconstructed with free vascularized flaps: a case report series [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Free vascularized flaps are the gold standard for reconstruction of the facial skeleton after surgical ablation of pathologies or when important atrophy of the jaws exists.

Where to find facial artery perforators: a reference point [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Reconstructive surgery of the midface using facial artery perforator (FAP) flaps is being used more frequently now as it has been reported to provide better aesthetic results and reduce a traditional two-stage procedure to a one-stage technique.

Lower lip reconstruction using a skin-mucosa Abbe-Estlander flap after squamous cell carcinoma excision [PDF]

open access: yesAnais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, 2017
: Lips are structures that play an essential role in aesthetics and in different functions such as nutrition and speech. The complex anatomy of the lips – with three different layers composed of skin, mucosa, and muscles – makes surgical management of ...
