Positive Sofic Entropy Implies Finite Stabilizer

open access: yesEntropy, 2016
We prove that, for a measure preserving action of a sofic group with positive sofic entropy, the stabilizer is finite on a set of positive measures. This extends the results of Weiss and Seward for amenable groups and free groups, respectively.

Progress in epitaxial growth of stanene

open access: yesOpen Physics, 2022
With the rise of graphene, other elemental 2D materials have received a massive increase in interest in recent years. However, while theoretical models of free-standing materials predict exotic properties, often outshining those of graphene, the ...

Cooking pasta with Lie groups

open access: yesNuclear Physics B, 2022
We extend the (gauged) Skyrme model to the case in which the global isospin group (which usually is taken to be SU(N)) is a generic compact connected Lie group G.

Free paratopological groups

open access: yesApplied General Topology, 2015
Let FP(X) be the free paratopological group on a topological space X in the sense of Markov. In this paper, we study the group FP(X) on a $P_\alpha$-space $X$ where $\alpha$ is an infinite cardinal and then we prove that the group FP(X) is an Alexandroff

Geon Statistics and UIR's of the Mapping Class Group [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Quantum Gravity admits topological excitations of microscopic scale which can manifest themselves as particles --- topological geons. Non-trivial spatial topology also brings into the theory free parameters analogous to the $\theta$-angle of QCD. We show

GROUP LAWS AND FREE SUBGROUPS IN TOPOLOGICAL GROUPS [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the London Mathematical Society, 2005
We prove that a permutation group in which different finite sets have different stabilizers cannot satisfy any group law. For locally compact topological groups with this property we show that almost all finite subsets of the group generate free subgroups.

Dense embeddings of surface groups

open access: yes, 2009
We discuss dense embeddings of surface groups and fully residually free groups in topological groups. We show that a compact topological group contains a nonabelian dense free group of finite rank if and only if it contains a dense surface group.

Robust Transport of the Edge Modes along the Photonic Topological Interfaces of Different Configurations

open access: yes, 2020
Two-dimensional photonic crystals made of six air holes on a core-shell dielectric material has been proposed to study the newly emerged photonic quantum spin Hall insulator.

Big Free Groups are Almost Free [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
It is shown that the big free group (the set of countably-long words over a countable alphabet) is almost free, in the sense that any function from the alphabet to a compact topological group factors through a homomorphism.

Topological properties of spaces admitting free group actions

open access: yes, 2011
In 1992, David Wright proved a remarkable theorem about which contractible open manifolds are covering spaces. He showed that if a one-ended open manifold M has pro-monomorphic fundamental group at infinity which is not pro-trivial and is not stably Z ...
