The world system theory can provide a refreshingly different perspective of global press freedom. The starting point of assessing press freedom should be the world system, not the ‘atomistic’ nation-state, because one cannot understand the part without knowing the whole, which is more than the sum of the parts.

The freedom of the press and the freedom of television
Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies, 1987This paper debates the question whether it is correct and fair to equate the freedom of the press, or the printed media, with that of television. The disparate characteristics of these two media are also discussed, e.g. newspaper's greater selectivity on the part of the reader and television's higher credibility rating.
