Herbage utilisation efficiency of continuously stocked marandu palisade grass subjected to nitrogen fertilisation

open access: yesScientia Agricola, 2015
Nitrogen fertiliser accelerates plant growth and increases herbage utilisation efficiency in continuously stocked temperate grass swards, indicating greater herbage production and harvest efficiency.

Differences in characteristics between naturalized threatened plants and other threatened plants

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Many non‐native plant species introduced by humans have become naturalized. At the same time many species are threatened in their native range. However, the number of plant species threatened in their native range that are naturalized elsewhere remains unknown.

Freqüências de corte e intensidades de desfolha em duas cultivares de alfafa (Medicago sativa, L). 1. peso, número, produção estacional e dinâmica de aparecimento das brotações basilares Cutting frequencies and defoliation intensities on two alfalfa (Medicago sativa, L) cultivars. 1. weight, number, seasonal production and dynamic of appearance of basal shoots

Predation on Artificial Caterpillars Varies With Vertical Stratification but Not Light Gradients in a Sugar Maple Temperate Forest

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Predation pressure varies vertically, with highest arthropod predation in the understory and highest bird predation in the canopy. Light availability differs across vertical strata, but predation patterns are more strongly influenced by height and forest structure than by light gradients.

Effect of Grazing Intensity and Frequency on Forage Accumulation and Agronomic Characteristics of Tropical Mixed Pastures

open access: yesGrasses
This study evaluated combinations of defoliation frequencies and intensities to identify grazing strategies that optimize forage accumulation and morphological composition in mixed pastures of Marandu palisadegrass (Urochloa brizantha cv.

Ammonia emissions from deciduous forest after leaf fall [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The understanding of biochemical feedback mechanisms in the climate system is lacking knowledge in relation to bi-directional ammonia (NH3) exchange between natural ecosystems and the atmosphere.

A protracted phenology: Post‐diapause larval development of a threatened butterfly

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Larval survival during diapause was high; hibernaculum webs were mostly located near Succisa pratensis plants, which often retained vital leaves through winter. Post‐diapause developmental time varied strongly depending on exposure to different microclimates, being reduced by litter cover, solar radiation and a higher heat load index.

Evaluating the impact of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus in Trentino (Alps, Northern Italy): first investigations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The spread of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus has been causing great concern regarding the survival of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) throughout Europe since the 1990s.

Characterisation of Sex Pheromone and Genetic Strain in Rachiplusia nu (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Populations Across Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rachiplusia nu, known as the sunflower looper (SFL) and belonging to the Plusiinae subfamily, is a major defoliator of soybeans, sunflowers and other horticultural crops across southern South America. This species has recently expanded to central and northern regions of Brazil, becoming a key soybean pest.
