Movers and Shakers: Kinetic Energy Harvesting for the Internet of Things [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Numerous energy harvesting wireless devices that will serve as building blocks for the Internet of Things (IoT) are currently under development. However, there is still only limited understanding of the properties of various energy sources and their ...

A MINIATURIZED BANDPASS FREQUENCY SELECTIVE SURFACE WITH HIGH SELECTIVITY BASE ON SLOT COUPLING

open access: yes, 2017
A Ku-band bandpass frequency selective surface (FSS) with high selectivity and miniaturization is proposed in this paper. We use two metallic strips and one slot to design the frequency selective surface structure which contains both electrical and ...

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

On the variable capacity property of CC/DS-CDMA systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A complete complementary code based direct sequence code division multiple access (CC/DS-CDMA) system has been proposed recently as a potential candidate for beyond third generation (B3G) wireless communications.

Recent Advances on Wideband Wide Scanning Connected Slot Arrays

open access: yesIEEE International Symposium on Phased Array Systems and Technology, 2022
Connected slot arrays with artificial dielectric layers (ADLs) are a type of wideband wide-scanning arrays with several favorable properties. A key advantage is the high front-to-back ratio provided by the artificial dielectric, which allows to reduce ...

Peptide Sequencing With Single Acid Resolution Using a Sub‐Nanometer Diameter Pore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To sequence a single molecule of Aβ1−42–sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the aggregate is forced through a sub‐nanopore 0.4 nm in diameter spanning a 4.0 nm thick membrane. The figure is a visual molecular dynamics (VMD) snapshot depicting the translocation of Aβ1−42–SDS through the pore; only the peptide, the SDS, the Na+ (yellow/green) and Cl− (cyan ...

Novel Polyimide-Based Conformal Bandpass FSS for X-band RADAR Communications

open access: yesJournal of High-Frequency Communication Technologies
A linearly polarized wide bandpass frequency selective surface (FSS) for RADAR communication application has been presented.  The proposed FSS is constructed in a single layer with a size of 0.25 λ0.

Passive Opto-Antenna as Downlink Remote Antenna Unit for Radio Frequency Over Fiber

open access: yesJournal of Lightwave Technology, 2018
A novel remote antenna unit, intended for application in the downlink of an analog radio frequency over fiber system, is proposed, whose radiated power originates entirely from the optical signal supplied by a single multimode fiber.

Solvent‐Free Bonding Mechanisms and Microstructure Engineering in Dry Electrode Technology for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dry electrode technology revolutionizes battery manufacturing by eliminating toxic solvents and energy‐intensive drying. This work details two promising techniques: dry spray deposition and polymer fibrillation. How their unique solvent‐free bonding mechanisms create uniform microstructures for thicker, denser electrodes, boosting energy density and ...

Silicon-organic hybrid electro-optical devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Organic materials combined with strongly guiding silicon waveguides open the route to highly efficient electro-optical devices. Modulators based on the so-called silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform have only recently shown frequency responses up to 100
