Fretting fatigue damage is a typical material damage arising in mechanical components. In such a damage condition, surface cracks can initiate at the surface contact zone, and under a fluctuating loading they can grow up to the complete failure of the ...

Fretting Wear Mechanisms and Their Effects on Fretting Fatigue
Journal of Tribology, 1988Fretting wear and fretting fatigue are governed by the rate of formation of materials (third-bodies) between the initial contact surfaces. Furthermore, the third-bodies must be maintained within the contact. The issue of the race between third-body formation and subsurface damage conditions the effect of fretting on fatigue.

So far, we have presented several of the elements of calculation necessary to analyse a range of idealised fretting contacts. They merely provide tools for determining the state of stress, strain and displacement, but do not, in themselves, permit production of initiation or crack propagation criteria, without extensive experimental data. The object of

The effect of surface damage by fretting corrosion pits under the backing ring or wheel seat will provide stress risers that will serve as crack initiation sites for fatigue crack initiation. Approximately one-half of North American axle failures are initiated by fretting. Both fretting under the backing ring and fretting in the wheel seat are reviewed.

On Crack Initiation Mechanisms in Fretting Fatigue
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 2000By using the crack analogue model of rigid flat-ended contact, crack initiation in fretting fatigue is analyzed. The coefficient of friction at the edge of contact, which characterizes the asymptotic stress field, is considered as the primary controlling parameter in the process.

Mechanics of fretting fatigue crack formation
Wear, 1995Abstract Fretting is a contact damage process arising from surface microslip associated with small-scale oscillatory motion of damped structural members. The fretting damage process is a synergistic competition among wear, corrosive and fatigue phenomena driven by both the microslip at the contact surface and cyclic fretting contact ...
