Fretting Wear

2017
Abstract Fretting is the small-amplitude oscillatory movement that can occur between contacting surfaces, which are nominally at rest. This article discusses fretting wear in mechanical components and the mechanisms of fretting wear. It describes the role of fretting conditions, such as fretting duration, slip amplitude, normal load ...

Fretting wear of sintered alumina

Wear, 1986
Abstract Cylinders of alumina, carbon steel, glass and tungsten carbide have been fretted against rectangular specimens of sintered alumina. The damage caused has been assessed by four-point loading bend tests. Coefficients of friction of the contacting surfaces have been measured.

Fretting wear of stainless steel

Wear, 1981
Abstract Tests were carried out to study the effects of metal pairs, surface coatings and lubricants on the fretting wear of stainless steel under severe conditions. The results obtained were as follows. (1) Metal pairs good for fretting prevention were SUS 304 stainless steel-copper and SUS 304 stainless steel-silver.

Understanding the fretting wear of Ti3SiC2

Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2006
The objective of the present research is to understand the tribological properties of Ti 3SiC2. The fretting wear experiments were conducted on hot pressed Ti3SiC2 against bearing steel under varying load (1–10 N). Under selected fretting conditions, Ti 3SiC2/steel couple exhibits higher COF of 0.5–0.6.

A generalized fretting wear theory

Tribology International, 2009
Abstract Combined impact-sliding fretting wear is a complex phenomenon due to the random nature of the excitation force and the self-induced tribological changes. Available models, which relate wear losses to the process variables, are empirical in nature and bear no physical similarity to the actual mathematical and physical attributes of the wear ...

Development of a fretting wear test rig and preliminary studies for understanding the fretting wear properties of steels

Materials & Design, 2006
Rolling element bearings experience fretting wear type of failures due to small relative oscillatory motion existing between races and rolling elements of the bearing. Small oscillatory motion between contacting surfaces that occur due to overall machine or system vibration and unexpected loads in service causes accumulation of wear debris in the ...

Numerical Investigation on the Effect of Wear Coefficient on Fretting Wear

2020
Fretting happens when a relative slip occurs between two contact parts. Fretting wear is the main damage in gross slip regime. In most of current researches, the wear coefficient is commonly considered as a constant, which needs further experimental validation.

Fretting wear of SiAlON ceramic

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2007
Friction andwear properties of Si6- Z Al zO zN8- Z ( z = 0.5) were studied in case of fretting. SiAlON samples were prepared by hot pressing without any externally added liquid. The effect of running time, slip amplitude, and normal load on friction and wear were investigated.
