Erving Goffman at 100: A Chameleon Seen as a Rorschach Test within a Kaleidoscope

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
The 100th anniversary of Erving Goffman's birth was in 2022. Drawing on his work, the Goffman archives, the secondary literature, and personal experiences with him and those in his university of Chicago cohort, I reflect on some implications of his work and life, and the inseparable issues of understanding society.

Influence of roughness on ZDDP tribofilm formation in boundary lubricated fretting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Influence of initial surface topography on tribofilm formation in ZDDP lubricated contact was analysed. A small displacement fretting tests with sinusoidal motion were carried out in classical sphere/plane configuration.

Progress and Poverty: Walter Rodney's Legacy

open access: yesThe American Journal of Economics and Sociology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The conventional view of human progress states that the more humanity makes progress, the less poverty is entrenched. But, global development is currently characterized by a persistent combination of economic progress and growing relative poverty. This endemic inequality has puzzled economists for years.

Fretting Friction and Wear Characteristics of the Internal Spiral Contact Steel Wires in the Hoisting Wire Rope Under Different Service Conditions

open access: yesLubricants
As a critical load-bearing component in mine hoisting systems, the service performance and lifespan of wire ropes are limited by the fretting wear behavior among their internal wires and strands.

Development of a fretting-fatigue mapping concept: The effect of material properties and surface treatments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Fretting-fatigue induced by combined localized cyclic contact motion and external bulk fatigue loadings may result in premature and dramatic failure of the contacting components.

What Matters Most? Developing a Core Patient Reported Outcome Set for Individuals With Genetic Intellectual Disabilities: An International Delphi Study

open access: yesJournal of Intellectual Disability Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Improving care and research for individuals with genetic intellectual disabilities (GID) requires the identification and measurement of relevant patient reported outcomes (PROs). PROs represent the patient perspective on their health status.

Identification of contact regimes in mechanical components for the evaluation of fretting damage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this work the regimes of contact in misaligned crowned splined couplings have been analyzed. Experimental tests have been performed in order to identify if fretting damage on the components appears as fretting wear or fretting fatigue.

Characterization of crack nucleation in TA6V under fretting-fatigue loading using the potential drop technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Crack initiation in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated experimentally in fretting fatigue conditions. A cylinder-plane geometry was used for the contact, and partial slip conditions were considered.
