Fricative Discrimination in Early Infancy

In three separate experiments using controlled natural stimuli and a high-amplitude sucking paradigm, infants' ability to detect differences between /s/ and /v/, /s/ and /∫/, and /s/ and /z/, respectively, was investigated. Evidence for discrimination was obtained for /s/ versus /v/ and /s/ versus /∫/ but not for /s/ versus /z/.

Fricative duration in esophageal speech

Comparative observations were made of fricative (/s/ and /z/) durations of normal and esophageal speakers. Differences between the average durational characteristics of fricatives spoken by normal and esophageal speakers varied systematically as a function of their voicing features.

The ‘glottal fricatives’

In the IPA chart which was the outcome of the IPA 1989 Kiel Convention, the glottal fricatives [h, ɦ] were included, as they were in previous charts. Unlike Kloster-Jensen (JIPA 1991: 42), I believe we were correct to leave [h, ɦ] as they were, in the space for glottal fricatives.
