Determination of soil shear properties on a soil to concrete interface using a direct shear box apparatus

open access: yesInternational Journal of Geo-Engineering, 2017
Direct shear experiments were carried out both to investigate the interaction between a predominantly cohesion less soil and in-situ concrete and the validation of the tangent of two-third of the angle of internal friction angle normally assumed in ...

From Geometry to Function: Programmable Mechanical Response in 3D‐Printed Adipose‐Inspired Soft Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven design of soft cellular metamaterials is systematically investigated by combining experiments, finite element modeling, and statistical prediction. The study quantifies how unit cell geometry and material properties govern stiffness, instability, densification, and energy absorption.

Confidence and Accuracy in Determination of the Critical State Friction Angle

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2009
ABSTRACT The critical state friction angle, φc, is a parameter of interest in many geotechnical analyses dealing with cohesionless soils. However, despite the triaxial test being widely used to estimate this parameter, the accuracy achievable from a limited number of triaxial tests is unknown.

High‐Performance n‐Type Organic Thermoelectrics Enabled by Control Over Microstructure, Orientation and Contact Plane in Naphthalenediimide‐Bithiazole‐Copolymer Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Effective control over the crystalline contact plane and microstructure of a naphthalenediimide‐bithiazole copolymer enables high‐performance n‐type thermoelectrics. While rubbing alignment induces a detrimental edge‐on orientation, subsequent solvent vapor‐induced re‐orientation facilitates a favorable mixed face‐on/edge‐on morphology.

Bridging Polymer Brushes and Coatings Through Ultra‐Thick Growth by Surface‐Initiated Photoiniferter Polymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Surface‐initiated photoiniferter‐mediated polymerization (SI‐PIMP) enables the controlled growth of UHMW polymer brushes with multi‐micrometer thicknesses, bridging conventional brushes and bulk‐like coatings. UHMW brushes are synthesized through a controlled/living process; they provide low friction and enhanced wear resistance under aqueous ...

Dilatancy and Friction Angles Based on In Situ Soil Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2015
AbstractDilatancy influences almost all aspects of the behavior of granular material, ranging from shear strength to stress-strain behavior. However, there is no practical method for estimating the dilatancy angle based on in situ soil properties, although the variables that influence dilatant behavior are well-known.

Molecular Rotors: From Newtonian Fluids to Functional Materials as Viscosity and Temperature Sensing Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular rotors are fluorescent molecules that are sensitive to viscosity and temperature variations in the environment. They exhibit a direct correlation between fluorescence and viscosity within Newtonian fluids. However, this correlation becomes less straightforward in complex systems.
