Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Contact mechanics applied to the machining of thin rings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Precision machining of thin rings is of key importance in the performance of many mechanical components such as bearings, rings, turbines, etc. An important factor to take into account is to know the influence of the clamping forces values at different ...

Exploring the influence of friction in the puncture mechanics of soft solids

open access: yesMeccanica
AbstractFriction is an ever-present force in our lives, affecting the interaction between objects in numerous ways. The common hypothesis of frictionless contact between a foreign rigid object (needle) and a target material during puncturing leads to a constant penetration force.

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Effects of Carbon Nanoparticles on Triboelectro‐Induced Surface Defects

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Carbon nanoparticles added to grease modify the electrocontact behavior. The synergy of particle concentration and electric current dominates the surface damage of metals in contact. Electrical surface damage caused by current leakage is a critical challenge in high‐performance applications such as electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains and wind turbine ...

Determination of the dynamic hardness of greases as a characteristic of deformation properties in a tribocontact

open access: yesПроблеми трибології, 2022
The efficiency of plastic oil is determined by the duration of its retention on the surface. Evaluation of the effectiveness of plastic lubricants depends on their mechanical properties.

Interactions between Molten High‐Silicon Electrical Steels and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Sliding without slipping under Coulomb friction: opening waves and inversion of frictional force

open access: yes, 2016
An elastic layer slides on a rigid flat governed by Coulomb's friction law. We demonstrate that if the coefficient of friction is high enough, the sliding localizes within stick-slip pulses, which transform into opening waves propagating at intersonic ...
