Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process widely used for welding metals, especially aluminum and its alloys. Invented in 1991 by The Welding Institute (TWI), FSW uses a non-consumable rotating tool with a specially designed pin and shoulder to generate frictional heat, softening the materials at the joint without melting them.

Banding in copper friction stir weld
Science and Technology of Welding and Joining, 2012Formation and microstructure of banding in a copper friction stir weld was studied using scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and nanoindentation. Unlike in aluminium, banding only appears in ‘cold’ friction stir welding (FSW) welds of copper. Banding is formed by layers of small and large grains.
