Chemically Fueled Active Transport
Biology uses chemical potential differences from molecules like ATP to drive membrane pumps, transporting molecules across membranes even against concentration gradients. Here, we report a synthetic system that transports small molecules from an aqueous phase (the sender) to an aqueous receiver across a centimeter‐sized immiscible solvent at the ...

Gas‐phase fragmentation experiments and theoretical calculations on a series of model complexes determine the intrinsic tendencies of the late 3d metals to undergo one‐versus two‐electron reactions and unravel the factors controlling the selectivity. Abstract Although organometallic complexes of the late 3d elements are known to undergo both one‐and ...

Phosphodiester groups occur ubiquitously in nature, e.g. in nucleic acids or in cyclic (di‐)nucleotides important for signal transduction. Proteins often use polar or positively charged amino acids to interact with the negatively charged phosphodiester groups via hydrogen bonds and salt bridges.

Modular megasynthases, such as polyketide synthases (PKSs) and non‐ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), are molecular assembly lines that biosynthesize many pharmaceutically and ecologically important natural products. Understanding how these compounds evolve could inspire the artificial evolution of compound diversity by metabolic engineering.

The Radical Anion, Dianion and Electron Transport Properties of Tetraiodotetraazapentacene
Filling the gap in the series of halogenated azaacenes. Tetraiodotetraazapentacene I4TAP is prepared and characterized. Its stable radical anion and high mobilities in organic field‐effect transistors make I4TAP a formidable n‐type semiconductor.

A Photochemical Macrocyclization Route to Asymmetric Strained [3.2] Paracyclophanes
A novel synthetic route to strained cyclophanes is reported, which involves the unexpected photochemical fusion of a carboxylic ester and a non‐activated methyl group. Functional experiments suggest that the previously overlooked C−C bond forming reaction involves an excited triplet state and intramolecular hydrogen abstraction. Using a flow reactor, a
