Condensation Frosting Characteristics of SAM-Coated Nanostructured Superhydrophobic Surface

open access: yesInternational Journal of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration, 2018
The present study aims to experimentally investigate the condensation frosting characteristics of the SAM-coated superhydrophobic surfaces under various environmental conditions. The extensive experiments were carried out under the well-controlled conditions with the surface temperature ranging from [Formula: see text]C to [Formula: see text]C, the ...

Potential applications of digital, visible, and infrared data from geostationary environmental satellites [PDF]

open access: yes
An hourly, digital data base from the Visible/Infrared Spin-Scan Radiometer (VISSR) instrument on the GOES-1 and SMS-2 geostationary satellites is described. Several examples of developmental applications of these quantitative digital data are presented.

Effects of Freezing on Soil Temperature, Freezing Front Propagation and Moisture Redistribution in Peat: Laboratory Investigations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There are not many studies that report water movement in freezing peat. Soil column studies under controlled laboratory settings can help isolate and understand the effects of different factors controlling freezing of the active layer in organic covered ...

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

Some statistical aspects of the long-term gill net monitoring programme for pike Esox lucius in Windermere (English Lake District) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
For more than 55 years, data have been collected on the population of pike Esox lucius in Windermere, first by the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) and, since 1989, by the Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IFE) of the NERC Centre for Ecology and ...

The urban heat island effect on frost damage of natural building stones [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Climate plays a major role in the weathering of building stones. This study specifically investigates the influence of the urban heat island (UHI)in Ghent, Belgium,on freeze-thaw (F-T) weathering ofnatural building stonesand their ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Potential Risk of Frost in the Growing Season in Poland

open access: yesAgriculture
Fruits, garden plants, and agricultural crops grown in Poland exhibit wide variations in their sensitivity to frost, particularly in early spring. In the case of frost, generally, the yield and quality are reduced, and sometimes, entire plants can be ...

Extreme Northern Acclimatization in Biennial Yellow Sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) at the Arctic Circle [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Biennial sweetclovers (Melilotus spp.) are among the most winter-hardy of the legumes used as forage crops (Bula and Smith 1954; Gorz and Smith 1973; Hodgson and Bula 1956; Klebesadel 1971b, 1980). Common strains and cultivars of both yellow-flowered

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
