In vitro and ex vivo metabolism of chemically diverse fructans by bovine rumen Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species [PDF]
Background Inulin and inulin-derived fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are well-known prebiotics for use in companion animals and livestock. The mechanisms by which FOS contribute to health has not been fully established.

Fructans and fructan‐metabolizing enzymes in leaves of Lolium perenne [PDF]
Summary Longitudinal variability is reported in internal carbon partitioning as is the activity of enzymes involved in fructan synthesis during leaf development of Lolium perenne cv. Bravo. Sink activity was reduced in L. perenne plants by cooling the roots while continuous illumination enhanced source activity, resulting in preferential accumulation ...

Testing water-soluble carbohydrate QTL effects in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) by marker selection [PDF]
Water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) are an important factor determining the nutritional value of grass forage and development of genetic markers for selection of WSC traits in perennial ryegrass would benefit future breeding programmes.

Stem carbohydrate dynamics and expression of genes involved in fructan accumulation and remobilization during grain growth in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes with contrasting tolerance to water stress. [PDF]
The genetic and physiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and water stress tolerance are scarcely known.

Effects of fructans-type prebiotics on lipid metabolism [PDF]
Several nondigestible but fermentable dietary carbohydrates are able to regulate lipemia and triglyceridemia in both humans and animals. The mechanism of their serum lipid-lowering effect remains to be elucidated. Oligofructose, which is a mixture of nondigestible and fermentable fructans, can decrease triacylglycerol in VLDL when given to rats.

Fructan and fructan‐metabolizing enzymes in the growth zone of barley leaves [PDF]
SUMMARYTo study the role of fructan in leaf development of barley seedlings, fructan contents and the activities of enzymes involved in fructan metabolism were measured in segments of the third leaf at the stage of maximal growth. Fructans amounted to more than 10% of the d. wt in the growth zone at the base of the developing leaf and decreased sharply
