The ecology of attraction: Fruit traits and frugivore diversity in neotropical Piper

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 3, Page 611-623, March 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Fruit traits can benefit plant reproduction by enhancing seed dispersal by mutualistic frugivores (e.g. seed dispersal syndromes), but identifying the role of specific fruit traits in mediating frugivory is challenging because these traits can serve multiple functions ...

Effects of Fruiting Neighborhood, Plant Traits, and Fruit Traits on Frugivore Visitation and Fruit Removal for an Understory Palm

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
We simultaneously evaluated how the fruiting neighborhood, defined as the number of fruiting palms in a 35 m radius, and relevant traits at the level of individual plants (e.g., height, crop size) and fruits (e.g., fruit and seed size, water, and sucrose content) influenced frugivore visitation and the number of fruits removed per visit in a common ...

A New Method of Fruit Marking for Studies on Chiropterochory

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
We used edible glitter to mark 15,526 fruits of three chiropterochorous plants at 700, 1000, 2000, and 3200 m from a bat roost in Brazil's caatinga. Glitter from all distances was detected at the roost, allowing the identification of specific feeding areas accessed, providing a new approach for zoochory studies.

Interação entre Avifauna e Euterpe edulis Mart. (Arecaceae) na Mata Atlântica do Sul do Brasil

open access: yesFronteiras: Journal of Social, Technological and Environmental Science, 2018
Considerando à importância da interação entre Euterpe edulis Mart. e aves frugívoras, este estudo buscou compreender a situação da caça e das interações ecológicas da avifauna com a espécie.

Ecological function over evolutionary legacy: The limited role of shared evolutionary history in shaping modern frugivory interactions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 12, Page 3688-3703, December 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Frugivory, encompassing interactions between vertebrates and plants that range from mutualistic to antagonistic, drives seed dispersal and underpins the structure and resilience of tropical ecosystems.

Redes de interações de frugivoria por aves em plantas nativas e exóticas em ambiente urbano [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Fruit consumption by birds is well reported in Brazil, but few studies compared the use of native and exotic fruit, especially in urban environment. Network Theory may be a useful tool in such studies, since it allows to evaluate multiple species of both animal and plants involved in interactions.

Isolated Trees in a Fragmented Tropical Landscape: A View Through the Soil Seed Bank

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 5, September 2025.
Here, we investigated patterns of plant species diversity, abundance, and composition in the soil seed banks of cattle pastures, under fleshy‐fruited, and nonfleshy‐fruited trees within pastures, and in secondary forest patches at ten study sites in Brazil.

Observações preliminares sobre a frugivoria por aves em Alchornea glandulosa (Endl. & Poepp.) (Euphorbiaceae) em vegetação secundária [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zoologia, 1996
An individual of Alchornea glandulos a (Endl. & Poepp.) was observed in Blumenau (26o55'26", S49o03'22"W), Santa Catarina State on the border of secondary Atlantic Rain Forest from september to november belween 1990 and 1991, with the goal of identifying species of birds with potential to spread out its seeds.

Plant and frugivore species characteristics drive frugivore contributions to seed dispersal effectiveness in a hyperdiverse community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 238-253, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Seed dispersal by frugivores is a crucial step of the life cycle of most plants, influencing plant population and community dynamics. Although very important for most ecosystems, we are just beginning to understand which are the mechanisms driving frugivore‐mediated ...

Apex predators can structure ecosystems through trophic cascades: Linking the frugivorous behaviour and seed dispersal patterns of mesocarnivores

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 6, Page 1407-1419, June 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Current global change scenarios demand knowledge on how anthropogenic impacts affect ecosystem functioning through changes in food web structure. Frugivorous mesocarnivores are a key link in trophic cascades because, while their abundance and behaviour are usually ...
