Comparative Effects of Three Microbial Starter Cultures on the Physicochemical and Sensory Quality of Fermented Sausages

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study innovatively links specific microbial compositions of commercial starter cultures to the evolution of key odorant and taste‐active amino acids, revealing the underlying mechanisms behind distinct flavor profiles. Three microbial starter cultures—Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC), Scarlet (ST), and Roxaane LC (LC), were added to sausages,

Application of Principal Component Analysis and Probabilistic Neural Networks in Ferralsols Recovery Evaluation Through Planting of Mabea Fistulifera and Eucalyptus Urograndis

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents an innovative assessment model for analyzing the evolution of degraded soils subjected to different reclamation strategies. The proposal combines statistical and artificial intelligence tools to jointly integrate multiple physical and chemical soil properties, allowing for a more synthetic view of the processes.

Osmotic tolerance and cryopreservation of Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) sperm

open access: yesTheriogenology Wild
Assisted reproductive technologies will become increasingly important to preserve bat genetics to prevent the extinction of bat species and provide biomedical models for viral and disease research.

Plant phenology supports the multi-emergence hypothesis for ebola spillover events [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Ebola virus disease outbreaks in animals (including humans and great apes) start with sporadic host switches from unknown reservoir species. The factors leading to such spillover events are little explored.

On the botanical history and nomenclature of the New World genus Piscidia (Fabaceae)

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Piscidia L. (Fabaceae) is a New World genus with nine recognized taxa (seven species and two varieties). The previous nomenclatural revisions, made in 1910 and in 1969, are revisited here. The names Derris grandifolia Heyde & Lux ex Donn.Sm. and P. cubensis Urb. required step II lectotypifications, with an epitype for the latter name.

Preferential consumption of larger fruits of Piper arboreum (Piperaceae) by Carollia perspicillata (Phyllostomidae) in the brazilian tropical dry forest

open access: yesBioscience Journal, 2014
Frugivorous animals may use morphological traits of food items such as size, hardness, shape, color and smell as cues that allow them to assess cost-benefit relationship of foraging activity.

Transcriptome sequencing and annotation for the Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis).

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) is one of the most common bats in the tropical Americas. It is thought to be a potential reservoir host of Tacaribe virus, an arenavirus closely related to the South American hemorrhagic fever viruses.

Stratified sampling enhances the understanding of bat–fruit networks in the southern Atlantic Forest

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Few studies have sought to understand the vertical patterns of bat–fruit systems, and therefore, it is not possible to evaluate whether interpretations based on data collected from a single stratum adequately represent the interaction patterns of this system. In this context, we evaluated the dissimilarity in the assemblage of frugivorous bats, plants,

Diversity, Transmission, and Cophylogeny of Ledanteviruses (Rhabdoviridae: Ledantevirus) and Nycteribiid Bat Flies Parasitizing Angolan Soft-Furred Fruit Bats in Bundibugyo District, Uganda

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Obligate hematophagous ectoparasitic flies of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea are distributed worldwide, but their role as vectors and reservoirs of viruses remains understudied.
