Evidence of Spin Frustration in a Vanadium Diselenide Monolayer Magnet [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Materials, 2019
Monolayer VSe2, featuring both charge density wave and magnetism phenomena, represents a unique van der Waals magnet in the family of metallic 2D transition‐metal dichalcogenides (2D‐TMDs).

Bridging the gap: Multi‐stakeholder perspectives of molecular diagnostics in oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Although molecular diagnostics is transforming cancer care, implementing novel technologies remains challenging. This study identifies unmet needs and technology requirements through a two‐step stakeholder involvement. Liquid biopsies for monitoring applications and predictive biomarker testing emerge as key unmet needs. Technology requirements vary by

Frustration, Entanglement, and Correlations in Quantum Many Body Systems

open access: yes, 2013
We derive an exact lower bound to a universal measure of frustration in degenerate ground states of quantum many-body systems. The bound results in the sum of two contributions: entanglement and classical correlations arising from local measurements.

Thirty Years of Cancer Nanomedicine: Success, Frustration, and Hope

open access: yesCancers, 2019
Starting with the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect discovery, nanomedicine has gained a crucial role in cancer treatment. The advances in the field have led to the approval of nanodrugs with improved safety profile and still inspire the ...

Navigating new norms: a systematic review of factors for the development of effective digital tools in higher education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
What factors make for an effective digital learning tool in Higher Education? This systematic review identifies elements of a digital tool that published examples reveal to be features of an engaging and impactful digital tool. A systematic literature search yielded 25 research papers for analysis.

Anomalous thermodynamics of a quantum spin system with large residual entropy

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2021
In contrast to strongly frustrated classical systems, their quantum counterparts typically have a non-degenerate ground state. A counterexample is the celebrated Heisenberg sawtooth spin chain with ferromagnetic zigzag bonds J_1 and competing ...

Probing Quantum Frustrated Systems via Factorization of the Ground State

open access: yes, 2010
The existence of definite orders in frustrated quantum systems is related rigorously to the occurrence of fully factorized ground states below a threshold value of the frustration. Ground-state separability thus provides a natural measure of frustration:

Differences in facial expressions during positive anticipation and frustration in dogs awaiting a reward

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
Facial expressions are considered sensitive indicators of emotional states in humans and many animals. Identifying facial indicators of emotion is a major challenge and little systematic research has been done in non-primate species.

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

Global-to-local incompatibility, monogamy of entanglement, and ground-state dimerization: Theory and observability of quantum frustration in systems with competing interactions

open access: yes, 2015
Frustration in quantum many body systems is quantified by the degree of incompatibility between the local and global orders associated, respectively, to the ground states of the local interaction terms and the global ground state of the total many-body ...
