Pinless tool for FSSW of AA 6061-T6 aluminum alloy

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2019
Abstract Pinless tools have been proposed to eliminate pinhole problems during friction stir welding; while strength of the joint could be decreased. Two probe tools with pin lengths of 2 and 3 mm and two pinless tools with the scroll groove and L-shaped grooves were used for lap welding of 2 mm thick 6061-T6 aluminum alloy sheets.

Influence of FSSW parameters on fracture mechanisms of 5182 aluminium welds

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2010
The influence of the tool rotational speed, the probe plunge depth and the shoulder penetration depth on weld microstructure and on the weld strength have been studied. The shear tests showed that the friction stir spot welds fail by nugget pullout. Three microstructural factors play a determinant role on the weld's strength: the size and location of ...

Influence of non-axisymmetric material anisotropy on FSSW static strength

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2015
This paper regards the analysis of structural behavior of Friction Stir Spot Welds (FSSW) in order to assess the failure mode and its dependence on mechanical properties distribution of the sheets material and on process parameters. In particular, in this paper is investigated the influence of non-axisymmetric anisotropy of material characteristics on ...

Thermo-Mechanical Modeling of Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW)

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2006
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper presents on-going finite element modeling efforts of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process using Abaqus/Explicit as a finite element solver. Three-dimensional coupled thermal-stress model was used to calculate thermo-mechanical response of FSSW process.

Effect of grain orientation on the corrosion resistance of FSSW joints made in AZ31B

Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology, 2017
ABSTRACTLocalised corrosion at the weld periphery of AZ31B friction stir spot welds has been associated with microstructural evolution during the welding process. Several attempts have been made to correlate these changes to the corrosion resistance of a joint; however, the influence of grain reorientation arising from the welding process has been ...

Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)

SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing, 2012
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is applied to join advanced high strength steels (AHSS): galvannealed dual phase 780 MPa steel (DP780GA), transformation induced plasticity 780 MPa steel (TRIP780), and hot-stamped boron steel (HSBS). A low-cost Si₃N₄ ceramic tool was developed

Parametric study of FSSW of aluminium alloy 5754 using a pinless tool

Welding in the World, 2014
A parametric study of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) of lap joints in aluminium alloy 5754 using a pinless tool with scrolled shoulder is presented. Experimental plan was done according to the response surface methodology (RSM), where tool rotation speed varied between 988 and 3511 rev/min, plunge rate between 24.4 and 150 mm/min and dwell time ...

Investigation of heat transfer and material flow of P-FSSW: Experimental and numerical study

Heat and Mass Transfer, 2018
Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is the joining process which utilizes a rotating tool consisting of a shoulder and/or a probe. In this study, the novel method of FSSW, which is called protrusion friction stir spot welding (P-FSSW), has been presented and effect of shoulder diameter parameter has been studied numerically and experimentally on the weld

Friction Stir Seal Welding (FSSW) Tube-Tubesheet Joints Made of Steel

Volume 6B: Materials and Fabrication, 2015
This paper demonstrates the feasibility of successful seal welding process of tube-tubesheet joints using the relatively new friction stir welding (FSW) process. The purpose of the reported study is to develop the process parameters and to test the feasibility of friction stir welding ASTM 179 seamless cold-drawn carbon steel tube into an ASTM A516 ...

Interface Structure and Bonding in Rapid Dissimilar FSSW of Al to Steel Automotive Sheet

2012
Producing robust friction stir spot welds (FSSW) between Al and steel sheet, with a cycle time short enough for industrial application, is extremely challenging. The problems with the conventional FSSW approach are discussed and a possible solution presented, termed “Abrasion Circle Friction Spot Welding” (ABC-FSSW).
