Macroalgal assemblages as indicators of the ecological status of marine coastal systems: A review

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Macroalgae have been utilized as biological indicators of ecosystem health in many monitoring programs worldwide. These programs have utilized various methods to quantify macroalgal community structures.

Loss of canopy-forming algal richness and coverage in the northern Adriatic Sea

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2021
Canopy-forming macroalgae, especially those belonging to the order Fucales, are creating the so-called brown algal forests that are considered amongst the most productive assemblages in the shallow coastal area.

THE SYSTEMATIC POSITION OF THE FUCALES [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 1939
T HE Fucales are probably the most widely distributed and the most abundant of all the brown algae. They have certainly reached the highest level of morphological and anatomical differentiation, yet their systematic position remains one of apparent isolation, and it has recently been claimed that they have been derived independently of all the other ...

Ascophyllum nodosum Application and Pre-Sowing Stimulation with Low-Frequency Magnetic Field as Factors Influencing Oat Grains (Avena sativa L.) Composition

open access: yesAgronomy, 2020
In this study, we tested the influence of two experimental factors on the composition of oat grain Avena sativa under the conditions of a three-year field study.

Thermal vulnerability of the Levantine endemic and endangered habitat-forming macroalga, Gongolaria rayssiae: implications for reef carbon

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Ocean warming is a major threat to marine ecosystems, especially to species with a narrow thermal niche width and narrow biogeographic distribution, like some habitat-forming seaweeds.

Unravelling the complexity of salt marsh ‘Fucus cottonii’ forms (Phaeophyceae, Fucales) [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Phycology, 2017
Genetic affiliation, nuclear DNA content, and gamete functioning were examined in small salt marsh Fucus from three localities in western Ireland. Individuals with small and dioecious receptacles were found at all localities, but production of germlings was only evident at Locality 1.

Characterizing morphology of Egregia menziesii (Laminariales) in California over 2 centuries using historical and contemporary herbarium specimens

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract The canopy‐forming feather boa kelp Egregia menziesii exhibits remarkable morphological variability across its geographic range. Regional morphotypes of Egregia were once considered separate species, but they were not determined to be genetically distinct; instead, their morphology was thought to reflect local physical or environmental ...

Carbon and nitrogen contents depends on macroalgal species, their tissue section, and development stage

open access: yesPhycological Research, EarlyView.
SUMMARY Assessing the potential for macroalgae to function as a carbon sink (blue carbon) and nitrogen (N) assimilation is under intensive investigation. The content of elemental carbon (C) and N in macroalgae is the best indicator of their potential; however, with respect to the thallus, C and N content varies in space and time.

Diversity of Fucales (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae) along the Coasts of Lipari and Vulcano (Aeolian Archipelago), Tyrrhenian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea)

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
This study explored the biodiversity of Fucales along the islands of Lipari and Vulcano, almost ten years after the last studies on the phytobenthos of these islands.

Response of Early Life‐Stages of Forest‐Forming Seaweeds From Warm‐Edge and Central Populations to Marine Heatwaves

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
Marine heatwaves (MHWs) pose a threat to global marine forests, with the effects of warming potentially being even greater on early life stages, which are often understudied. We evaluated the responses of Phyllospora comosa—one of the most crucial forest‐forming seaweeds in South‐eastern Australia—early life stages from warm‐edge and central ...
