Progress and future directions for seaweed holobiont research
Summary In the marine environment, seaweeds (i.e. marine macroalgae) provide a wide range of ecological services and economic benefits. Like land plants, seaweeds do not provide these services in isolation, rather they rely on their associated microbial communities, which together with the host form the seaweed holobiont.

Cystoseira species are some of the most important marine ecosystem-engineers, forming extended canopies comparable to land forests. Such forests are sensitive to human disturbances, like the decrease in water quality, the coastal development and the ...

A revision of the genus Sargassum (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) in South Africa
Abstract A total of 27 different Sargassum epithets are listed in the literature for South Africa. The main aim of our study was to revise this species list using newly collected specimens in order to provide a reliable and illustrated tool for the identification of South African Sargassum .

Abstract Aim Coralligenous reefs are the main marine bioconstructions in terms of spatial distribution within the Mediterranean basin. Two distinct reef morphologies can be distinguished based on the surface and topographical features of the seafloor: cliffs developing vertical slopes and banks found on gently steep or horizontal bottoms. Despite their

Understanding how marine ecosystems respond to global warming is crucial for their protection. We studied subtidal macroalgal communities in the southeastern Bay of Biscay for over 30 years. By estimating the thermal traits of hundreds of species, we analyzed how temperature influenced community dynamics.

The temperate marine Peruvian Province: How history accounts for its unusual biota
Among extant temperate marine biotas, the Peruvian Province is highly unusual in, among other traits, a very high incidence of limpets, gastropods with a labral tooth (to assist in predation), a reversed latitudinal diversity gradient, and the absence of several ecological guilds.

Abstract The burgeoning demand for protein, exacerbated by population growth and recent disruptions in the food supply chain, has prompted a rapid exploration of sustainable protein alternatives. Among these alternatives, algae stand out for their environmental benefits, rapid growth, and rich protein content.
