Molybdenum-99-producing 37-element fuel bundle neutronically and thermal-hydraulically equivalent to a standard CANDU fuel bundle

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2016
Abstract 99m Tc, the most commonly used radioisotope in diagnostic nuclear medicine, results from the radioactive decay of 99 Mo which is currently being produced at various research reactors around the globe. In this study, the potential use of CANDU power reactors for the production of 99 Mo is investigated.

Neutronic analysis of CANDU fuel bundle with reprocessed fuel

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2021
Abstract Fuel economy and novel fuel cycles for nuclear industry is a wide subject that required a massive effort along the decades. The reprocessing methods has shown a great potential to reach this goal to reduce the environmental issues related to burnt fuel disposal in nuclear resources utilization frame which is the primary subject. In second to

Modelling of fully-flexible fuel bundles

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2021
Abstract This work presents an analytical framework to model fully flexible fuel bundles. The model is capable of predicting the vibration response of fuel bundles with a large number of elements and various end conditions, such as flexible endplates. The fuel bundle and the supporting structure were modelled utilizing finite beam and plate elements.

Dose assessment of a fresh 43-element CANFLEX-ACR fuel bundle and fresh 37-element fuel bundle

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2009
Fresh fuel bundles are handled frequently during fabrication and on-site during inspection and normal CANDU new fuel loading. However, little information is available on the effective dose rates from gamma, bremsstrahlung and neutron radiation and the equivalent dose rates to skin.

Subchannel analysis in BWR fuel bundles

Annals of Nuclear Energy, 1985
Abstract Steady-state two-phase-flow calculations have been performed with the multidimensional drift-flux code canal . Flow-regime-dependent drift-flux parameters have been used to evaluate the flow quantities in the subchannels. Consistent modeling of the mixing components, e.g.

A comparative study of reactivity feedback effects for a HALEU molybdenum-producing PHWR fuel bundle and a standard PHWR fuel bundle

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2020
Abstract A new 37-element PHWR fuel bundle, which can produce Molybdenum-99 (99Mo) when irradiated inside a PHWR, has recently been proposed (Nichita and Haroon, 2016). The modified 37-element fuel bundle uses High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) at the periphery of fuel pellets and has been shown to be neutronically and thermal-hydraulically ...

Effect of power variations across a fuel bundle and within a fuel element on fuel centerline temperature in PHWR bundles in uncrept and crept pressure tubes

Annals of Nuclear Energy, 2017
Abstract The neutron flux and fission power profiles through a fuel bundle and across a fuel element are important aspects of nuclear fuel analysis in multi-scale/multi-physics modelling of Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) with advanced fuel bundles. Fuel channels in many existing PHWRs are horizontal.
