Impacts of Burnup-Dependent Swelling of Metallic Fuel on the Performance of a Compact Breed-and-Burn Fast Reactor

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2016
The U-Zr or U-TRU-Zr cylindrical metallic fuel slug used in fast reactors is known to swell significantly and to grow during irradiation. In neutronics simulations of metallic-fueled fast reactors, it is assumed that the slug has swollen and contacted ...

Thermal and Catalytic Cracking of JP-10 for Pulse Detonation Engine Applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Practical air-breathing pulse detonation engines (PDE) will be based on storable liquid hydrocarbon fuels such as JP-10 or Jet A. However, such fuels are not optimal for PDE operation due to the high energy input required for direct initiation of a ...

Optimizing biomass use for carbon storage and land use with the OptiBiU model

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Optimal biomass use in a circular bioeconomy requires a system perspective to guide decision‐making. The Optimizing Biomass Use (OptiBiU) model was developed for this purpose. The model distinguishes among primary biomass production, intermediate products, and biobased products, and incorporates recycling.

Comparative field‐scale assessment of TLUD and Kon‐Tiki biochar systems: agronomic performance and net CO2e‐based techno‐economics

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Post‐harvest agricultural residues in Latin America are commonly underutilized, leading to greenhouse gas emissions and lost opportunities for bio‐based value creation. This study tests the hypothesis that decentralized, farmer‐scale pyrolysis technologies can deliver comparable agronomic benefits while exhibiting distinct techno‐economic and ...

Potassium hydroxide activation of microalgal biochar for improved adsorption efficiency

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Activated carbon was prepared from Chlorella by carbonization and potassium hydroxide activation, and its structural properties and methylene blue (MB) adsorption performance were evaluated. Raw Chlorella exhibited an adsorption capacity of 287.2 mg g−1, which decreased to 214.8 mg g−1 after carbonization.
