The steel industry accounts for about 7%‐9% of global CO2 emissions. While H2‐based direct reduction is a long‐term route, near‐term solutions are needed for existing plants. Internal carbon cycles reuse steelworks off‐gases and by‐products, enabling circular carbon use and supporting CCU integration.

Catalytic Oxidation of CO and VOC in Flue Gas of Coffee Roasting Machines
Platinum‐coated cordierite monoliths effectively oxidized CO and VOC in coffee roasting exhaust with higher Pt loadings lowering light‐off temperatures. Scaled up 90 g/ft3 catalyst in a 5 kg roaster achieved 96% CO and around 78% VOC conversion at 350°C, highlighting stable operation requires flue gas temperatures ≥350°C.

Methanol With Increased Water Content in Internal Combustion Engines
This study investigates the potential to improve overall Well‐to‐Wheel efficiency by using low‐purity methanol from synthesis of hydrogen and furnace gas as CO2‐source. Combustion efficiency is comparable to pure methanol, while distillation energy could be saved.

Techno‐Economic Analysis of Methanol Production From Steel Mill Gases
A techno‐economic analysis for the synthesis of methanol from steel mill gases is carried out. Four different process concepts are defined and analyzed. The analysis yields levelized cost of methanol estimates between €1130 and €1419 t−1. Sensitivity analyses identify hydrogen production as the largest contributor to cost.

Laminar Burning Velocity of Ammonia‐Hydrogen Mixtures Predicted by Machine Learning
Ammonia–hydrogen blends aid defossilization, but slow combustion kinetics require complex modeling. Although chemical kinetic modeling is computationally expensive, machine learning surrogates offer fast predictions. This study trained GPR, DT, and ANN models on 1445 experimental points.

Aircraft fuel burn performance study: A data-enhanced modeling approach
The rapid growth in commercial air transportation and the price volatility of fuel push for fuel reduction policy to be implemented. Some changes in technology (e.g., improved designs of aircraft and engines), operations (e.g., improved flight routes ...

Burning fat fuels photoreceptors
Nature Medicine, 2016Current dogma suggests that high-energy–consuming photoreceptors depend on glucose. A new study reveals that the retina also uses fatty acid b-oxidation for energy, and that dysregulated lipid and glucose photoreceptor energy metabolism may drive neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Abstract The steam locomotive was originally developed for the private railways in the coalfields of Britain, and, not surprisingly, coal was used as the source of heat. Almost immediately after public railways had subsequently started to spread across the country, legislation, in response to public opinion, required locomotives ‘to ...

A model of external burning of liquid fuels
12th Propulsion Conference, 1976Injection of a pyrophoric liquid fuel into the airstream about a vehicle can generate control forces on the vehicle. A method for calculating the performance of such a system is described. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the drop cloud resulting from breakup of the liquid jet and to diffusion and combustion of the vapor resulting from ...
