Review of recent advances in the design, synthesis, and modification of biochar for remediation of heavy metal pollution in water

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 104, Issue 4, Page 1769-1795, April 2026.
Research frontiers in using biochar for heavy metal remediation. Abstract Heavy metal contamination of water has long been a serious environmental issue. Biochar and biochar‐based composites are emerging as effective and sustainable solutions for heavy metal removal due to their strong adsorption abilities and environmentally friendly nature.

A DEM-PSO-Kriging framework for minimizing mechanical damage and nutrient pollution from controlled release fertilizers

open access: yesIndustrial Crops and Products
Controlled release fertilizers constitute a high-value segment of industrial crop products. However, their efficacy in sustainable agriculture relies heavily on functional integrity, which is often compromised by mechanical damage during application ...

Balancing Savanna Ungulate Diversity and Biomass: Optimal Human Use, Landscape Features, and Vegetation Types Under Varying Rainfall and Land Use

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
This study analyzes the relationship between anthropogenic and environmental variables and ungulate diversity and biomass in Kenya's Mara Ecosystem. The results suggest that ungulate species richness peaks in pastoral landscapes with access to areas more than 3–4 km from settlements but decreases in the presence of sheep and goats.

On ANOVA decompositions of kernels and Gaussian random field paths [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The FANOVA (or "Sobol'-Hoeffding") decomposition of multivariate functions has been used for high-dimensional model representation and global sensitivity analysis.

GloMarGridding: A Python Toolkit for Flexible Spatial Interpolation in Climate Applications

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 13, Issue 2, April 2026.
Global surface climate datasets contain structural uncertainty that is difficult to attribute to individual processing steps. We present GloMarGridding, a Python package that isolates the spatial interpolation component using Gaussian Process Regression (or kriging) to generate spatially complete fields and uncertainty estimates. The techniques used in

Conformal prediction for functional Ordinary kriging

open access: yes
Functional Ordinary Kriging is the most widely used method to predict a curve at a given spatial point. However, uncertainty remains an open issue. In this article a distribution-free prediction method based on two different modulation functions and two conformity scores is proposed.

Recirculated submarine groundwater discharge dominates nutrient inputs and enhances eutrophication risk in a coastal lagoon

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a widely recognized pathway for nutrient transport to coastal systems. Prior studies overlook the unique biogeochemical signatures of different SGD pathways, neglecting their differences in biogeochemical transformations and spatiotemporal factors.

Identifying Priority Vegetation Zones for Floodplain Wetland Management Based on Hydrological and Meteorological Drivers

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract While hydrology and meteorology influence floodplain wetland vegetation, their relative contributions and spatial patterns remain poorly quantified. Hydrological conditions, in particular, can be altered by anthropogenic activities such as damming.
