Safety Functions versus Control Functions
2001It is argued that there need not be any conflict between "Control Functions" and "Safety Functions" as long as "Functionality" and "Safety" are integral parts of the design process and considered on an equal basis at the earliest stage possible in the development. A practical example is given to illustrate this viewpoint.

A Model-Driven Engineering Framework to Support the Functional Safety Process
2019 ACM/IEEE 22nd International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems Companion (MODELS-C), 2019The design of safety-related systems traditionally has long and costly development cycles due to the highly manual safety engineering process, which is guided by industry standards.

IEC 1508: Functional Safety: Safety-Related Systems
Proceedings of Software Engineering Standards Symposium, 2002The paper gives an overview of draft international standard IEC 1508: Functional Safety: Safety-Related Systems. The objective of this standard is to provide a basis for safely automating process plant machinery, medical devices and other industrial equipment. The standard is concerned with preventing two basic types of unsafe incident.

Safety systems and their functions
2006Abstract By necessity, a nuclear power plant is composed of the parts required to generate electric power (the “process” parts or systems) but also of a complexity of safety systems. The name “safety systems” here indicates all those systems that are not strictly necessary to the plant operation or to health protection under normal conditions, but ...
