Fontan procedure for functionally single ventricle and double-inlet ventricle

2018
In 1971, Fontan and Baudet published their landmark paper describing a surgical correction whereby the pulmonary and systemic circulations were placed in series in a patient with tricuspid atresia. Since that time, the indications for this procedure have been extended to include all defects with a functionally univentricular heart.

Improved early results with the Fontan operation in adults with functional single ventricle

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2004
A growing number of adults with functional single ventricles are presenting as candidates for first-time and redo-Fontan operations. This study describes the clinical presentation and early operative results of adults who have undergone Fontan modifications.Between July 1995 and April 2003, 23 patients (>18 years old) had Fontan operations.

Newer Imaging Modalities in the Assessment of Heart Function in Single Ventricle Hearts

Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2013
The limitations of geometry assumptions in 2-dimensional echocardiographic assessment of the single ventricle (SV) have been overcome by recent advances in 3-D echocardiography. Improved reproducibility for measuring ventricular volumes and ejection fraction using 3-D echocardiography makes it ideally suited for serial monitoring of SV systolic ...

Palliation of Functionally Single Ventricle Patients in Sub-Saharan Africa—Is It Justifiable?

World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, 2019
Resource constraints in many sub-Saharan African countries undermine efforts to provide the full spectrum of pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery. Palliation of the child born with functionally single ventricle is the lowest priority for policymakers when viewed from the perspective of cost-effectiveness.

[Challenges in the surgical management of hearts with a functional single ventricle].

Orvosi hetilap, 2005
Nowadays, the complex congenital heart diseases with a functional single ventricular haemodynamics can be treated with good results with bi-directional Glenn (BDG) and total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) procedure. The late results are determined by the ventricular function. To assess the surgical results of "high risk" BDG and TCPC procedures, where ...
