Mutual Fund Size and Fund Performance [PDF]
This thesis studies the relationship between size and performance for 67 equity mutual funds in Norway, using a 14 years dataset free of survivorship bias from January 2005 to December 2018. We construct three portfolios based on the funds’ size and evaluate their performance by looking at their risk-adjusted return estimated from various factor models.

We investigate the effect of scale on performance in the active money management industry. We first document that fund returns, both before and after fees and expenses, decline with lagged fund size, even after accounting for various performance benchmarks. We then explore a number of potential explanations for this relationship.
