The Elliptical-Spheroidal and Elliptical-Elliptical Galaxy Dichotomies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
This paper summarizes Kormendy et al. (2009, ApJS, in press, arXiv:0810.1681). We confirm that spheroidal galaxies have fundamental plane correlations that are almost perpendicular to those for bulges and ellipticals. Spheroidals are not dwarf ellipticals. They are structurally similar to late-type galaxies.

The Kormendy Relation of HDF Ellipticals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1997
We present the results of the detailed surface photometry of a sample of elliptical galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. In the (surface_brightness-effective_radius) plane, the elliptical galaxies of the HDF turn out to follow a `rest frame' Kormendy relation, once the appropriate K+E corrections are applied.

Structure, Formation and Ages of Elliptical Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1997
The structural properties of elliptical galaxies are consistent with their formation in a merging hierarchy. In this picture, the role of gaseous processes and dissipation decreased with increasing mass creating preferentially rotationally flattend disky ellipticals (and S0s) at lower luminosities and boxy, anisotropic ellipticals (often with peculiar ...

A Theory of Changes and the Fundamental Plane [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1996
Elliptical galaxies have been observed to cluster near a ribbon along a two-dimensional plane (the Fundamental Plane of Elliptical Galaxies) in the three dimensional space of effective radius, effective surface brightness and central velocity dispersion.
