Teaching relational database fundamentals [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 3rd Conference on Computing Education Practice, 2019
This paper describes and evaluates changes introduced in six successive\ud years teaching a relational databases module. We explain\ud how we plan to obtain some certainty on the value of interventions.\ud Using an archive of data over the period, we find some interventions\ud that should not be repeated.

On the density of states and extinction mean free path of waves in random media: Dispersion relations and sum rules

open access: yes, 2008
We establish a fundamental relationship between the averaged density of states and the extinction mean free path of wave propagating in random media. From the principle of causality and the Kramers-Kronig relations, we show that both quantities are ...

Imaging of Biphoton States: Fundamentals and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Quantum states of two photons exhibit a rich polarization and spatial structure, which provides a fundamental resource of strongly correlated and entangled states. This review analyzes the physics of these intriguing properties and explores the various techniques and technologies available to measure them, including the state of the art of their ...

Aggregations in classes of fuzzy relations

open access: yesAnnales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis: Studia Mathematica, 2006
We consider aggregations of fuzzy relations using aggregation functions of $n$ variables. After recalling fundamental properties of fuzzy relations we examine aggregation functions which preserve reflexivity, symmetry, connectedness and transitivity of ...

Spacetime is for SU(2) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The generators of rotations, boosts and translations are built up based on the commutation and anticommutation relations of the fundamental two dimensional representation of SU(2).

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

Uncovering the Origin of Efficiency Roll‐Off in TADF OLEDs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
OLEDs based on thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials often suffer from a severe drop in efficiency at high brightness levels. This work presents a technique to uncover the source of this efficiency drop, and quantifies the exciton‐exciton and exciton‐polaron annihilation processes responsible for efficiency losses in our TADF OLEDs ...

Algorithmic Design of Disordered Networks With Arbitrary Coordination: Application to Biophotonics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Predictive Design of Disordered Networks: Disordered network‐like morphologies are abundant in nature, from cytoskeletal networks to bone structures and chalcogenide glasses. These structures are naturally hard to characterize. A new algorithmic tool extends the established Wooten–Weaire–Winer (WWW) algorithm to valencies above 4.

The Evolution of Capitalist Ownership and Forms of Distribution of the Social Product

open access: yesУправленческое консультирование, 2018
In the article, the main tendency of evolution of capitalist property is analyzed. It is revealed that the modern stage of this evolution is characterized by emergence of the social and economic relations and mechanisms contradicting the fundamental ...

Unlocking Multi‐Valley Energy Pockets and Interface‐Induced Phonon Filtering in InSb Thermoelectrics by Reaction‐Driven Interface Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
InSb, a narrow‐bandgap semiconductor with high carrier mobility, is promising for thermoelectric energy conversion but suffers from high lattice thermal conductivity and strong bipolar conduction. Here, in situ interface engineering using Co2O3 nanoprecursors forms hierarchical CoSbx/In2O3/CoSb3 heterostructures that enhance phonon scattering and ...
