Scandalisation, gender and space in ancient Rome: The case of Cicero and Clodia
Gender &History, EarlyView.Abstract This article analyses the public attack on Clodia Metelli, a Roman aristocratic woman, by the orator Marcus Tullius Cicero in a trial in 56 BCE. Drawing on modern scandal theory, this article analyses how Cicero uses scandal dynamics to turn Clodia, the witness in the case, into the culprit.

Gender &History, EarlyView.ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations. I argue that the beginnings of modern cremation were shaped by bourgeois men who claimed certain identifiers for themselves in a gendering and Othering way.

It argues that Churchill was sympathetic to France and, in particular, unusual among Englishmen of his generation in being sympathetic to its political system, but also that this sympathy did not make Churchill consistent in his relations with France.
