Bacterial–fungal interactions: ecology, mechanisms and challenges [PDF]
Fungi and bacteria are found living together in a wide variety of environments. Their interactions are significant drivers of many ecosystem functions and are important for the health of plants and animals. A large number of fungal and bacterial families engage in complex interactions that lead to critical behavioural shifts of the microorganisms ...

Microbial ecology: Fungal foes and friends
Current Biology, 2022A tripartite interaction between soil fungi, soil bacteria that produce phenazines that are toxic to the fungi, and a second bacterium that sequesters and detoxifies phenazines illustrates the complexity of antagonistic and mutualistic bacterial-fungal interactions.

The epiphytic lichen Lobaria pindarensis is a Himalayan endemic species with little information on distribution, genetic diversity and structural complexity. During an intensive survey in the Nepal Himalayas, we collected 1256 thallus fragments from 45 phorophyte species to study their distribution and population genetics along an elevational gradient.

Fungal ecology: Truffle-guzzling birds
Current Biology, 2021A new study of truffle fungi in Patagonia reveals the importance of native bird species in spore dispersal. This has wide implications for the study of animal-fungal symbioses in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Ecology of Fungal Food Spoilage
1997Food is not commonly treated as an ecosystem, perhaps on the basis that it is not a “natural” system. Nevertheless an ecosystem it is and an important one, because human food stores are vast. It can be argued, indeed, that man has now been growing and storing enough food sufficiently long that some rapidly evolving organisms, such as haploid asexual ...

Ecology of plant‐herbivore communities: A fungal component?
Natural Toxins, 1993AbstractWe consider how microorganisms may alter conventional theories of the organization of plant‐herbivore communities. We focus on endophytic fungi and their role in mediating interactions among herbivores, their host plants, and natural enemies.
