Maintaining understory vegetation in oil palm plantations supports higher assassin bug numbers

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 4, Issue 4, October–December 2023., 2023
Reduced understory vegetation complexity in oil palm plantations leads to a significant drop off in numbers of assassin bugs, which are major pest control agents within the system. This suggests that maintaining understory vegetation in oil palm has the potential to boost both biodiversity and pest control.

Benign effects of logging on aerial insectivorous bats in Southeast Asia revealed by remote sensing technologies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 7, Page 1210-1222, July 2023., 2023
Logged forests can provide an important refuge for many common bat species in Southeast Asia, but do not capture the full breadth of forest‐specialist species. Nevertheless, logged forests provide substantially better habitat for bats than tree plantations.

Evidence of biotic resistance to exotic plant invasion in degraded Bornean forests

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 4, Page 767-778, July 2023., 2023
We found that herbivory on invasive Clidemia hirta plants increased when closer to native related plants (Melastoma app.), and in more shaded locations, and was associated with fewer reproductive organs on C. hirta. This suggests host‐sharing by specialist Melastomataceae herbivores is occurring and may explain why invasion success of C. hirta is lower

Logging leaves a fingerprint on the number, size, spatial configuration and geometry of tropical forest canopy gaps

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 2, Page 354-367, March 2023., 2023
Using airborne LiDAR acquired in Borneo, we explore what canopy gaps can tell us about how tropical forest structure is impacted by and recovers from logging disturbance. We find that logging and subsequent regrowth substantially alter not just the number and size of gaps in a forest, but also their spatial arrangement and geometric complexity.

Differential nutrient limitation and tree height control leaf physiology, supporting niche partitioning in tropical dipterocarp forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 8, Page 2084-2103, August 2022., 2022
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Revealing the mechanisms of environmental niche partitioning within lowland tropical forests is important for understanding the drivers of current species distributions and potential vulnerability to environmental change.

Weak edge effects on trees in Bornean rainforest remnants bordering oil palm

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 921-932, July 2022., 2022
Edge effects have consequences for rainforest tree communities, particularly in highly fragmented agricultural landscapes. We studied edge effects in forests bordering oil palm plantations in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, and found that loss of large trees caused a significant reduction in aboveground carbon near edges.

Testing the effectiveness of the forest integrity assessment: A field‐based tool for estimating the condition of tropical forest

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 2, Issue 2, April–June 2021., 2021
Robust assessments of forest condition are critical for successful forest management, but many existing techniques are highly technical, time‐consuming, expensive, or require specialist knowledge. Here, we examined the effectiveness of the rapid (<1hr) FIA survey tool by conducting ∼ 1,000 assessments of forest condition at 16 tropical rainforest sites

Riparian buffers act as microclimatic refugia in oil palm landscapes

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 58, Issue 2, Page 431-442, February 2021., 2021
Widely legislated riparian buffer widths of 20–30 m each side of a river may provide drier and less humid microclimatic conditions than continuous forest. Adopting wider buffers and maintaining high vegetation quality will ensure set‐asides established for hydrological reasons bring co‐benefits for terrestrial biodiversity, both now, and in the face of
