Hygiene Defense Behaviors Used by a Fungus-Growing Ant Depend on the Fungal Pathogen Stages
Parasites and their hosts use different strategies to overcome the defenses of the other, often resulting in an evolutionary arms race. Limited animal studies have explored the differential responses of hosts when challenged by differential parasite ...

Using novel approaches of Hill‐number based and coverage‐standardized dissimilarity metrics and community‐weighted traits, we show that tiger moth communities exhibit various traits prone to land‐use intensity and undergo a complex and non‐linear response to tropical rainforest recovery, corroborating recent findings on biotic differentiation (Keck et ...

Size, Spines, and Nests: What Drives Variation in Death‐Feigning Behavior in Fungus‐Farming Ants?
We investigated death‐feigning (DF; thanatosis) in fungus‐farming ants, testing how stimulus intensity, morphology, and nest traits shape its occurrence and duration using generalized linear mixed models. Stronger stimuli increased both likelihood and duration, but most variation was structured across species, colonies, and individuals.

Microbiota‐Mediated Sequential Gallery Colonization by Adults and Larvae of an Invasive Bark Beetle
Dispersing adult beetles harbor more pinitol‐degrading microbes to colonize novel host pines with high levels of pinitol stress. These microbes from the beetle's exoskeleton and gut will be transmitted into the gallery via adults’ feeding and frass, whose proliferation in the gallery contributes to the formation of a low‐pinitol microhabitat.

Microbiome‐mediated immunity: Limited support from the gazelle dung beetle
Digitonthophagus gazella rely on a maternally inherited microbiome passed across generations via a maternal faecal pellet called the pedestal. We experimentally manipulated the presence of the pedestal, providing it to some individuals while withholding it from others to determine how pedestal microbiota may affect beetle immune potential.

Oviposition and care decrease the total haemocyte concentration. Oviposition and care affect haemocyte type proportions. Serratia marcescens challenge does not affect the immune cell parameters. Abstract Reproduction and immunity are essential biological processes that compete for resources and energy.

First Record of the Genus Mycetarotes (Emery, 1913) (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) from Colombia
The genus Mycetarotes is a fungus-growing ant (Formicidae: Myrmicinae: Attini) mostly recorded south of the Amazon: in southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. Here we report the first record of this genus in Colombia: M. parallelus (Emery,

Abstract Introduction Revegetation using native vegetation is a commonly used technique to reclaim landscapes degraded by mining activities. Revegetation efforts in the arid Southwestern United States face physical, geochemical, hydrological, and biological challenges unique to drylands.

Wolbachia Horizontal Transmission Events in Ants: What Do We Know and What Can We Learn?
While strict vertical transmission insures the durability of intracellular symbioses, phylogenetic incongruences between hosts and endosymbionts suggest horizontal transmission must also occur.

Cognitive Symbionts. Expanding the Scope of Cognitive Science With Fungi
Abstract It has been argued that fungi have cognitive capacities, and even conscious experiences. While these arguments risk ushering in unproductive disputes about how words like “mind,” “cognitive,” “sentient,” and “conscious” should be used, paying close attention to key properties of fungal life can also be uncontroversially productive for ...
