Researchers undertook a meta-analysis of the effects of home monitoring on blood pressure. Randomised controlled trials were included if participants had essential hypertension and were trying to achieve blood pressure targets. The participants who did home blood pressure monitoring used ambulatory monitors.

Understanding and interpreting funnel plots for the clinician
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2018Funnel plots are an increasingly common graphical tool which are widely used in the literature. They were first introduced by Light and Pillemer in 1984 . In scientific literature, funnel plots are used to identify the probability of bias in meta-analyses and compare institutional performance.

Funnel Plots and Their Emerging Application in Surgery
Annals of Surgery, 2009To familiarize surgeons with the use of funnel plots as a control tool to assess quality in surgery.Surgical outcomes are an important component of quality in healthcare delivery. Several control tools have been introduced and tested including the use of graphical tools such as funnel plots.

Funnel plots for comparing institutional performance
Statistics in Medicine, 2004Abstract‘Funnel plots’ are recommended as a graphical aid for institutional comparisons, in which an estimate of an underlying quantity is plotted against an interpretable measure of its precision. ‘Control limits’ form a funnel around the target outcome, in a close analogy to standard Shewhart control charts.

Funnel plots for institutional comparisons [PDF]
We introduce -funnelcompar-, a Stata routine that performs the analysis suggested by David J. Spiegelhalter (Funnel plots for comparing institutional performance, Statistics in Medicine, Volume 24 Issue 8, 1185-1202). The basic idea in funnel plot is to plot performance indicators against a measure of their precision in order to detect outliers.

An interactive funnel plot to visually test for publication bias
2021I here provide an R script to draw an interactive funnel plot based on the meta-analysis results by Karg et al. (2011), who have found strong evidence for an effect of 5-HTTLPR x stress on depression. In my view, the funnel plot suggests a formidable publication bias and this is excellent material for my class!

Chimpanzee right‐handedness reconsidered: Evaluating the evidence with funnel plots
American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2002AbstractEvidence for population‐level right‐handedness in nonhuman primates seems inconsistent and contradictory, and many hypotheses have been advanced to account for this volatility. Funnel plots (scatter plots of percent right‐hand use vs. sample size) offer a straightforward graphical technique for assessing: 1) the strength and consistency of ...
