PHILOSOPHY AND PHYSICS OF PREDEMONSTRATION FUSION DEVICES [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
A PDFD will operate in the 1980's and must provide the plasma and plasma support technology information necessary to warrant design, construction, and operation of succeeding experimental power reactors and then the demonstration plant. The PDFD must be prototypical of economic fusion devices to justify its cost.

High beta predemonstration fusion devices (philosophy, characteristics, and R and D requirements) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
A predemonstration fusion device (PDFD) must provide the physics and technology information necessary to warrant design, construction, and operation of succeeding fusion reactors. This report sumarizes in three sections the bases for developing a PDFD.

Adaptive Twisting Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces torque‐controlled twisting metamaterials as a transformative platform for adaptive crashworthiness. By combining multiscale predictive modeling with experimental validation on additively manufactured gyroids, it demonstrates tunable stiffness, collapse stress, and energy absorption.
