Data, not documents: Moving beyond theories of information‐seeking behavior to advance data discovery

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, Volume 76, Issue 4, Page 649-664, April 2025.
Abstract Many theories of human information behavior (HIB) assume that information objects are in text document format. This paper argues four important HIB theories are insufficient for describing users' search strategies for data because of assumptions about the attributes of objects that users seek.

Sleep‐trackers in the wild: A faceted taxonomy for information and interaction design

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract Consumer‐grade sleep‐tracking technologies (CSTs) have brought sleep into everyday data practices, reframing it from a clinical concern into a site of personal optimization and reflection. Yet existing taxonomies of sleep‐tracking often medicalize users and overlook the complexity of sleep‐tracking technologies. This paper presents SleepTax, a

Operational Risk Management using a Fuzzy Logic Inference System [PDF]

open access: yes
Operational Risk (OR) results from endogenous and exogenous risk factors, as diverse and complex to assess as human resources and technology, which may not be properly measured using traditional quantitative approaches.

Interpreting algorithmic information cues: User sensemaking of search autocomplete moderation

open access: yesJournal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract Autocomplete is a search feature that algorithmically generates information cues for any keywords entered in the search bar. While this feature makes the search process more efficient, it also frequently produces biased, misleading, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate suggestions.

On the similarity relation within fuzzy ontology components

open access: yes, 2005
Ontology reuse is an important research issue. Ontology merging, integration, mapping, alignment and versioning are some of its subprocesses. A considerable research work has been conducted on them.

Fuzzy argumentation for trust

open access: yes, 2008
In an open Multi-Agent System, the goals of agents acting on behalf of their owners often conflict with each other. Therefore, a personal agent protecting the interest of a single user cannot always rely on them. Consequently, such a personal agent needs

Between soft power and suspicion: Chinese international students as diasporic actors in U.S.‐China geopolitical tensions

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines the under‐theorized political role and identity of Chinese international students, who emerge as significant actors caught between U.S. soft power ambitions and rising geopolitical suspicion. Amid escalating U.S.‐China tensions, these students are forced to confront environments shaped by competing geopolitical discourses ...
