Reflections on psychodynamic psychotherapy for patients with cancer facing existential threat

open access: yesBritish Journal of Psychotherapy, Volume 42, Issue 1, Page 49-61, February 2026.
Abstract This paper explores the role of psychodynamic psychotherapy in the treatment of patients with cancer, a therapeutic approach that has faced criticism for various unexamined reasons. Given the limited literature on this subject, we aim to contribute by examining (i) the specificity of the cancer experience, particularly its five main ...

Where Mathematical Symbols Come From

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, Volume 18, Issue 1, Page 169-186, January 2026.
Abstract There is a sense in which the symbols used in mathematical expressions and formulas are arbitrary. After all, arithmetic would be no different if we would replace the symbols ‘+$+$’ or ‘8’ by different symbols. Nevertheless, the shape of many mathematical symbols is in fact well motivated in practice.

O Advento do Algoritmo: a Idéia que Governa o Mundo

open access: yesBoletim GEPEM, 2004
“Aristósteles está  lá,  e Abelardo,  e Frege  e Cantor, ainda  de roupa branca  de  hospital. Peano  e  Hilbert   estão  conversando;  Russel  está olhando fixo  para Gödel,  e Gödel está olhando fixo  para o nada.

Historical and Projected Impact of Global Climate Change on the Extrinsic Incubation of Dirofilaria immitis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
We have used past temperature records and future temperature projections to understand the past and possible future epidemiology of canine heartworm. The range of the area hyperendemic for heartworm may change in the future, especially in extreme carbon emissions scenarios.

An Empirical Comparison of Semantics for Quantified Vague Sentences

open access: yesProblemos
We investigate the compositional semantics of vague quantified sentences, focusing on sentences such as “All of the students are tall,” where a non-vague quantifier quantifies into a vague predicate. While much work has been done on vagueness in natural

What Was Homer Honing in the Odyssey?

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 6, Issue 1, December 2025.
Abstract We summarize the data provided in Homer's the Odyssey concerning Odysseus' journey and suggest a completely new view of what was Homer trying to convey to us. We suggest that Homer was honing the idea of synergy between rules (determinism) and chance (randomness), an idea deeply rooted in natural processes as well in mathematics.

Linear confinement of a scalar particle in a Gödel-type spacetime

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2018
Based on the studies of confinement of quarks, we introduce a linear scalar potential into the relativistic quantum dynamics of a scalar particle. Then we analyze the linear confinement of a relativistic scalar particle in a Gödel-type spacetime in the ...

Gödel Meets Carnap: A Prototypical Discourse on Science and Religion

open access: yesZygon, 1997
Modern science, based on the laws of physics, claims validity for all events in space and time. However, it also reveals its own limitations, such as the indeterminacy of quantum physics, the limits of decidability, and, presumably, limits of ...
