Modulation of the GABAA receptor by steroids
Seminars in Neuroscience, 1991Abstract The functioning of the GABA A receptor-chloride ion channel is subject to several modulatory influences. Facilitation by benzodiazepines and barbiturates and antagonism by picrotoxin involve separate sites on the GABA A protein that are each distinct from the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) recognition site.

Electrophysiology of GABAA and GABAB receptor subtypes
Trends in Neurosciences, 1988Abstract The participation of GABA receptors in the inhibitory transmission at mammalian central synapses was demonstrated experimentally two decades ago. Whilst the ‘classical' action of GABA involves the opening of Cl − channels, pharmacologically distinct effects of GABA on cation channels were detected later. This led to the notion of GABA A and

Molecular biology of the GABAA receptor
1992Abstract The GABA A /benzodiazepine receptor has been the focus of much study by pharmacologists, in particular with respect to the question of receptor heterogeneity. The recent application of molecular biological techniques to this area has revealed at least fourteen different GABA A receptor subunits, each encoded by a single gene.
